D&D 5E New Spell: Galling Stone

I think the one part that is unbalanced - that just occurred to me is that it violates the approach to saves. Normally a save results in 1/2 or all damage negated. Spells where damage cannot be avoided usually require a line of sight to hit roll - like a Ray of Frost. This spell breaks those...

D&D 5E New Spell: Galling Stone

All that is true. The part that causes the restraint is that the caster is concentrating on maintaining the stone in the exact X, Y, Z position. Normally a gallstone goes with you. Now imagine one that will not move and is the size of a golf-ball. :)

D&D 5E New Spell: Galling Stone

Yes, the interest in not moving is simply because it hurts each time they try. For a first level or weaker NPC, it would not be nice - might even result in death. But yes, eating the damage is the purpose of the save. Making the save eats the damage and releases the target from their...

D&D 5E New Spell: Galling Stone

I am looking for recommendations on this spell. Is it OP? Is it UP? (Frankly, I was thinking of the Rogue Vax and the Bard Scanlan in the Vox Machina battle against Umbrasil when I came up with the idea. I think it is very Scanlanesque.) Any recommendations for tweaking? This is my...

D&D 5E Races in my Own Campaign World

I started playing 1E 40 years ago next month. Within a year I had memorized all the saving throws by type, class, and level. I knew all AC combinations, loved using the Runka to disarm opponents, openly used the Melnibonean mythos in almost everything, and was trying to program more than my...

D&D 5E Races in my Own Campaign World

Except that we don't have that experience. I have just purchased the books, largely thanks to discovering Vox Machina. The rules I am talking about would make that transition functional for those like myself who are starting out as the DM transitioning already existing materials into the...

D&D 5E Races in my Own Campaign World

Those who made Pathfinder created 3.5, and used those formulas as the rules by which they determined when an idea had achieved game balance. The rules may not have been public when D&D 3.5 came out, but they did exist. Those at WotC have these rules, and have them well calculated and tested...

D&D 5E Races in my Own Campaign World

Since they have nothing indicating how to adjust that CR that isn't possible. As to being DM, Authority is granted power because it can be trusted to give power away. In gaming, give away to much power and there is nothing to challenge the player. Give away too little and the agenda of the...

D&D 5E Races in my Own Campaign World

I sort of see that as trying to be a Supreme Court Justice without a Constitution from which to make legal decisions. When I was putting my library in Library of Congress order and got to my RPG books, they had nothing, no reference no. When I called them to ask where these books would go...

D&D 5E Races in my Own Campaign World

I have seen the Lizardfolk stats and they don't meet my race description. 5E doesn't appear to have any vocabulary, structure, rules, charts, method to assist in this. I went up and edited my OP to dark vision and CMD. But if there were actual rules for race creation I wouldn't have had that...

D&D 5E Races in my Own Campaign World

Well, pretty much everything here at the Pathfinder SRD is an example of rules that are not there. Everything which calculates the CR effect from Race Points (RP) so that the DM can attempt to maintain game balance. http://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamemasterin...ting-new-races All I see in the DMG and...

D&D 5E Races in my Own Campaign World

The reason I am doing the 3.5 conversion is because the 5E rules - well, don't seem to be rules. I have read the DMG and the PHB and they tell me nothing I find usable. That is why I posted here. I would like some real rules or frankly some rules. My campaign is set on a world revolving...

D&D 5E Races in my Own Campaign World

I have read the DMG and PHB in 5E. I have been looking online for days. Two things, which are somewhat related, have me baffled. The first is Feats - which I can't really get a grip on at all. There is nothing in the charts, instructions, etc. that definitely states how many feats a...
