Do you increase monster hit points?

I like to co-ordinate attacks between a pair or small group of similar monsters, or monsters which are residents or denizens of a given area. The Doppleganger which makes a flanking AO, during the onset of melee, for instance, has a perfect opportunity to slip into a party un-noticed...

    Everybody Cheats?

One thing I've observed, during my time on this rock, is that statisticians and survey takers are some of the worst cheaters of all. They create statistics or take surveys only to the point where it will prop up a stance, supposition, or opinion. Sunseeker, I wholly agree, a DM who changes...

    Everybody Cheats?

Dostoevsky once wrote:"If God did not exist, everything would be permitted." By extension, play WITHOUT a DM would be your "Calvinball". I can't imagine a game where even the most scrupulous DM applies the rules with perfect uniformity. I'd wager it would either be either the very best or...

    Everybody Cheats?

The DM's role, of and by itself, is arbitrary, to begin with. Case in point, I ask a Rogue with a high DEX to do a skill check to scale a steep hillside in the dark in the rain. I don't tell him the minimum roll I will accept, because I'm looking at it as a pass/fail situation, which he has a...

    Suspense in RPGs

It re-enforces the idea that the players are going into a dangerous environment, which helps foster the suspense, by stressing the urgency. If everybody thinks their characters are going to be safe, play gets boring. You absolutely DON't want to kill characters predictably, that would be a...

    Everybody Cheats?

Seems to me, if you're going to cheat, you cost yourself a lot of time and money in the process. You could find a five year old kid, and beat him at checkers. You'd get the same satisfaction from "winning", and save yourself the cost of dice, books, etc, and the time it took to set up an...

    Suspense in RPGs

One way to preserve suspense is for a PC to get killed, occasionally. Sure it happens more in the lower levels, but when a higher level character buys it, it preserves the integrity, suspense, and overall rewarding outcome of the game.

Will you make transsexual Elves canon in your games ?

I just don't see where gender change would affect the general outcome of the game. Would it perhaps, as sex change to female, make the character a thinner, lighter, rogue/thief? Would a change to a male give the character better upper body strength for climbing, or fighting?

    Who Was at Fault?

IMO(JMHO,YMMV), Player A should have attacked some other portion of the monster, say, the legs. Since the monster was distracted by the Player B in it's mouth, the DM could then have assigned a small attack bonus to Player A, for Player B's "interaction". Then Player B could have had the...

Fishermen, Fish, and Bait (read: "GMs, Players, and Gold")

I haven't pushed the DIE button lately, but I remember a room full of acid barrels which was probably more entertaining for the DM than for us. Of course, we didn't know it was acid in the barrels, till too late, and we all got... ...burned... ... not quite OMGWTFBBQPWNED, but the...

Preparing From The Player's Side Of The Screen

Help the DM out, whenever possible. Avoid rules lawyering, and Metagaming, at all costs. If you don't know what they are, find out. DMs have a hard enough play as it is, you don't want to make it harder on them than it already is. Be aware of and follow your DM's House Rules, play will flow...

Character concepts you like...but probably won’t get to play.

I am in the process of emulating a Druid, of old, in the 3.5 version. At level 8 or 9 he succeeded in charming a Howler Wasp queen, and making a deal to suspend animate 100 adult Howler Wasps in a bag of holding, until needed, for an offensive against a Mind Flayer. The original mission...

    Need some ideas

It's a chance for the rogues and casters to investigate and scry; to ferret out the cause/effect relationships, here. Where's the RA liquid coming from? Where are the large frogs emerging, initially? Are they interrelated at all? Or is it merely a species of large frogs tad-polling nearby?

Flipping the Table: Did Removing Miniatures Save D&D?

The whole point of D&D is creative imagination and abstract thought. Dice, maps, miniatures, are all aids to the process, in many instances, but not really neccessary. In our campaigns, we use glass beads for monsters, objects, and other important features, when needed. IMO, 4E's big fail was...

How Mainstream is Dungeons and Dragons with 5e? Vox Mainstream.

I was around when that nerd-dork and his buddies were LARPing the steam-tunnels at MSU, "playing D&D" when he disappeared in 1979. Since he, and some of his coffee drinking friends took the game WAY too seriously, D&D got a major black eye in the press, academia denounced the game as Satanic...
