add 1/2 level to ability checks? What? Why?

Touche! I retract my complaint. The issue is still there, but I've just had my eyes opened to the fact it always was. Thank you.

add 1/2 level to ability checks? What? Why?

I'm on the side of the OP here. I WANT to like 4E, but there are some issues that just feel wrong. This is one of them. There are a number of things that irk me, but I intend to overlook them until I've got at least a few games in. There are some changes that I really love, but they don't shine...

Am I missing something? Spellcasters and armor?

    AHAH! Un-labeled, un-indexed, but it's there. Thanks!

Am I missing something? Spellcasters and armor?

Armour proficiency On a related note to the rest of the thread... Where are the penalties for not being proficient in armour? The feats just say you gain training in the armour, but I cannot find anywhere that it actually state what that means. With weapons, not being proficient means you miss...

D&D 4E What would make you decide against 4e?

Pretty simple really - I won't buy this edition if they split the basic content across too many 'core' books. I refused to by PHB2 for content that should have been in PHB1. Where are my sacred cows? Zustiur.

If we all rolled the normal way for stats, how come he has three 18's?

I meant sets as in, you roll one set for each ability. That is, you roll 3d6 for strength, this is one 'set' 3d6 for dexterity is the next set, and so on. Zustiur

races & hp; what do people think of a more...well, real/logical approach to HP?

No thanks, I'd rather play DnD. This is most definitely one of those 'sacred cows'. Zustiur.

If we all rolled the normal way for stats, how come he has three 18's?

On a related topic - Does anyone have a list of how the various dice rolling methods equate to in points buy? That is, if you look at the statistics, how many points do you expect from: a) 3d6 six sets b) 4d6 drop lowest. six sets c) 4d6 drop lowest. seven sets, drop lowest d) 4d6 reroll 1s...

Laptops at the table - Do you use them?

Maybe you should consider switching off your wireless modem! Kills the source of that behavior without removing a very useful tool. Zustiur.

Take, take, and take and never DM. What do players bring to a gaming group?

Let's see - in my group it feels like this: The players don't own any books or miniatures The players don't put any effort towards keeping a journal (or indeed keeping any information on what happened during the game) The players don't bring food or other goodies I always have to host Certain...

Stacking +1 ammo with +1 Weapons

This is where the economic argument falls down. Sure, you can have a higher bonus by dropping an enhancement from the bow and increasing the arrows... but the melee fighter's sword isn't going to run out of ammo. As for stacking - I think I've always played the 2e way? Where the enhancements...

You are in charge of what WOTC puts out for DnD.

1 The complete cartographer. A short guide for DMs on making good maps, including tips on architecture, geography and different 'styles' of cartography. 2 Increase the quantity of maps-of-mystery generated by WotC. Both in Dungeon/Dragon mags and on their website. Zustiur.

What 3.5 Core Books Do I Need to Buy

Very helpful I've been wondering exactly the same thing as the OP. I had also drawn the conclusion/assumption that PHB and maybe PHBII would be all I need. The DMG's don't really hold a lot of rules per se, so I don't think the update there is a major issue. The PHB contains the majority of the...

    Help me find DnD resources.

I knew I would get a good response by posting here. ENWorld rules. No one has provided maps with the 'old-world-hand-drawn' quality that I'm hoping for, so any more suggestions here are definately welcome. I think FireyDragon is the solution to question 2. No suggestions so far for cheap...

    Help me find DnD resources.

Lots of dungeons... but very few overland maps. Thanks for the link. This is the sort of style I'm after http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/mapofweek/Overland_4_72_dpi_nv390.jpg Does anyone else have a source like this? Ack! I forgot all about image search. Thanks for reminding me. See my...

    Help me find DnD resources.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggg! I GIVE UP! I just realized I've spent about 6 hours today scouring the net for various resources, and I've gotten nowhere! Can somebody PLEASE help me with the following: 1) A source of free, printable, overland maps that I can...

Escaping from combat, or keeping villains alive

Ah. I'm using 3.0 books. So no, there is only 'one' Symbol spell, and it is definately level 8. That aside, a 5th level spell still indicates NPCs about twice the level I'm thinking of for the BBEG. Green Slime: I've just added sleep arrows to my list of potential items. (Psi)SeveredHead: I'm...

Escaping from combat, or keeping villains alive

Stalker0: Jaw droppingly simple. Light armour and run feats for all of the men! Green Slime: Picking on the fools that give chase sounds like an excellent plan. Kid Charlemagne: The church bell trick would be very cinematic and well suited to the sort of game I'm trying to run. Expeditious...

Escaping from combat, or keeping villains alive

Some good replies so far. I'll try to respond to each in turn. Arwink: I don't think I've ever found circumstances where anyone gets away, unless I was approaching TPK. I only expect the 'Robin' character to get away once, just to give the party something to hunger for. I would not normally...
