    The perils of winter

Now that's interesting... When I did research prior to beginning this thread, I got consistent results stating that a blizzard was more about the wind than about the snow-fall. According to what I read, blizzards happen when the winds whip up the snow that is already on the ground. Exact...

    The perils of winter

I got carried away with the game description there, and didn't comment on everything I wanted to comment on. I'll hold onto ice storms as a future weapon. A blizzard should be scary enough for now. By my estimation of how winds work, they're either safe from the wind-near-water issue, or really...

    The perils of winter

Some added background which I deliberately left out of the OP: As mentioned, the weather is being magically manipulated. Here's how- Evil Bad Guys from the neighbouring country(s) want to wipe the people of this country off the map, and then move in once all resistance has been negated. Thus far...

    The perils of winter

I swear I posted this last week, but the thread is no-where to be found. In my game, the party are currently a day's foot travel (under normal conditions) away from their home. It's the middle of winter, and a blizzard is about to hit (unexpectedly). As I live in a place that never snows, I'm...

My game is 31 years old about now!

Thanks Aramax, That's a very minimalist system you've got there. I can see why it would work so well. I've taken note of the primary/secondary ability score bonus idea. That may make its way into my own system.

    D&D 3E/3.5 Going back to 3.5 - advice?

In my opinion, most of the 3E prep is in the mind. Take a 4E DMing mindset to 3E and you should be fine. Specifically: * The numbers don't have to be "right" per PC build guidelines * Not every skill, feat etc has to be filled out. Just note down the stats you actually need * Forget spell...

    D&D 5E 11 spell levels... really

Though there's an important side question here. WHY don't people play past 12th? Is it just because of wizards? I reckon there might be more to it than that. Spreading spell tiers over more levels may not actually have the effect you describe.

    D&D 5E 11 spell levels... really

I'm still of the opinion that the following should happen: 1) 'Spell Levels' are renamed to 'Spell Tiers' 2) For Cleric and Wizard types, we should continue with 9+1 tiers (i.e. 0-9 tier spells) 3) Those tiers should be split across 30 levels 4) Only character levels 1-20 should be in the PHB 5)...

My game is 31 years old about now!

Your game is older than I am! As someone who is currently writing his own rules, I would love to see your home-made ruleset. In fact, I'd love to see both of them - the older one you used for 10 years and the current one.

D&D 5E Pet Peeve: Weapon Weights

I'm leaning towards encumbrance rather than weight too. Perhaps it could be measured in 'coin weight' (cn). Ahh full circle heheh On a more serious note, I don't actually think coin weight is a good idea. I'd rather see small items with 0 encumbrance, and things like swords with 1 or 2...

D&D 5E Exploration Rules You'd Like To See

That is precisely why I decided on 'Consumable supplies' rather than just 'supplies'. Perhaps 'perishable supplies' would have been a more appropriate name. Essentially food + water, with an extra 1/2 lb or 1 lb thrown in for good measure. I'd prefer non-perishable items to be listed explicitly...

DUNGEON MASTERS: How do you do your session plans!?

Ah, NPCs. An area I need to work on greatly. I've been pondering this recently. I think I need two separate catalogues of NPCs. The first is for 'minor' NPCs - shop keepers, quest givers, sailors, other random people The second is for 'major' NPCs who actually have things like class and level...

D&D 5E Exploration Rules You'd Like To See

I like where you're going with this method in general, and am taking notes. The quoted text is the one bit I have an issue with. Head Wound and Broken Leg both say 'Hit Point loss' to me. DnD has never modeled specific injury, and I don't think this is a good time or place to introduce it. That...

    Short People

As someone has posted on the WotC page; they look like gnomes to me. Especially the coloured pictures. Both races need to be considered together to ensure they both look short, without looking the same.

DUNGEON MASTERS: How do you do your session plans!?

I went looking with great interest, but while I could find reference to the docs, I couldn't find the docs themselves. There are no files at the bottom.

DUNGEON MASTERS: How do you do your session plans!?

Second thoughts, I'll make time. This thread is worth it. I am one of those DMs who has typically created too many notes, and thus not been able to find or recall details during game sessions. It wasn't uncommon for me to spend more time in prep than in play. I got sick of that. My prep time is...

DUNGEON MASTERS: How do you do your session plans!?

I use Microsoft one note to actually store my notes. I started doing that because of an enworld thread a few years ago. As as note content its concerned, I break it into two sections, the first is a session summary starting with a recap of the previous session, the second is the actual...

D&D 5E Exploration Rules You'd Like To See

Just thinking aloud here... What if we included fatigue points as a new resource? Each character had say 25 fatigue per day. Each combat uses up 3 points. Each skill use takes up 1 or more points. Skills like climb typically using more than pick lock. Each hour of adventuring beyond 8 hours...

D&D 5E Exploration Rules You'd Like To See

This is what I want to see for wilderness exploration. Resources, being used up, much like hit points... Obvious resources: Time, money, food, water, carrying capacity, energy (fatigue), light, rope, clothing, warmth. I'm sure there are more. I want to see players actually planning and making...

    Crafting, Resources, and D&D

Because a lot of us, myself included, are simulationists at heart. People like me want the realistic stuff to remain realistic, while the fantasy stuff is placed on top as an additional layer. We don't want the fantastic stuff to alter or replace the realistic stuff. I haven't been able to find...
