I'm not wowed by the map, nothing really wrong with it, to me its just a typical map of a small village. It does its job of giving me a visual reference of the village's layout to show my players, that's all I really need it to do.

Basic Fantasy RPG is by far my favorite retroclone. The Core rules combine the feel of BD&D with a nice dose of modern mechanics. Plus a ton of free (and optional) supplements to choose from that allows a lot of customization. And everything is free (PDFs) or at cost for printed books.

Not much to add, other than it is a great module, have fun with it.

Overall I liked it more than I thought I would, not sure on advantages/disadvantages but I'm willing to give that a try. themes and backgrounds seem cool, a nice simple way to customize a character. Magic Missile as a cantrip, usable at will, not in my campaign.

I don't know about restoring my faith, but they do seem to be moving in a direction with 5E that I like. 3E/3.5 had some things I thought improved D&D but in the end was not a system I enjoyed running/DMing, 4E was so far away from "my" idea of D&D that I totally quit following anything WotC...

I agree a cap of 18 for humans with a point or two higher for demi-humans (like a 19 or 20 for a dwarves constitution. for example.)
