Dire hawk has 3 attacks ... but when?

The thought of a hawk standing on the ground, taking a bite with its beak, then swinging out its left leg to claw attack and then switching the ballance in its feet quickly and atempting to claw with its right foot seams odd to me.

    Stronger Skeletal monsters?

Video games always have pesky skeletons that are not 101. They have spells and alternative weapons, more hit points, turn resistance (since they are higher HD), or whatnot. The SRD says "Advancement: As base creature (or — if the base creature advances by character class)." but it also says...

Dire hawk has 3 attacks ... but when?

A dire hawk (and many other birds) have three attacks (a bite, and two claws) but when does the creature get more than just a single bite or claw? I'm familiar with the rules on when you get more than one attack and when you get just one however, I wasn’t sure if there was a rule somewhere...

Can a cockatrice turn undead to stone?

I appreciate your insight everyone. I never imagined that I would have to discuss whether or not a skeleton can be turned to stone. Let me rake your brain some more…. If two people are holding onto each other (holding hands, hugging, grappling), and person A gets turned to stone...

Can a cockatrice turn undead to stone?

A few sessions ago we had a situation where we (the party) were attacked by a few cockatrices. In our party, our wizard uses the undead skeleton familiar from unearthed arcana. Throughout the course of the battle, the skeleton was hit with the cockatrice’s beak. Then the debate came. Can a...

Paladin as adversary in a good campaign?

Something to consider is people want consistency. Even if the current situation is not ideal, if they are used to it, they generally don't want to change it - even if it would be for their better. How is a country of people that have been involved in fighting and distrust for 150 years going...

Paladin as adversary in a good campaign?

Something to consider is that the general populace will be suspicious of any information they hear. With so many years of war, they probably have nearly seen or heard of it all such as betrayals, doppelgangers, and charming magic to name a few. Even if clerics did cast commune to find out that...

    Cleave questions

Cleaving on an AoO can cause serious problems if allowed. Read these to find out why. Bucket o' puppies n' Cleave? Bucket o' Snails lives! Rules debates in the game?

When Skill Focus loses its value

A cloak of elvenkind provides a +5 circumstance bonus. An elixer of hiding provides a +10 circumstance bonus. They don't stack. If your character had maxed ranks, has the items, and chugs the potion, he'll have a +26 bonus which, of course, would effect some of the numbers posted in your examples.

idea for a 5 level healer cohort

The Forgotten Realm Campaign Setting page 19 & 20. They were written for 3.0. Not sure if anythinig changed or not and whether they are in another book. Races of Farun? There are four types, each having a level adjustment of +1

Actually, I think they have the paper subtype which makes them vulnerable to fire but immune to critical hits. :p

    Individual XP

I agree with the others although I myself probally would have awarded him some XP - until reading this post that is. I would have given him 1/2 the XP award for a lvl 6 fighting a CR 3 due to the circumstance of him starting a fight to level up. I wouldn't fret about him "taking advange of...

    Long Term Fatigue

I like the concept of this. My players too do the same. Thier character's are always on the go, even in town and I get the same blank stares. "Relax? What do you mean? I am relaxing. I'm in the tavern getting drunk while the others are making the plan to go to the dungeon first thing in...

    Is Scorching Ray Too Good?

I have always been on the recieving end of SR and I don't find it to be overbalancing. Powerful yes, but not worthy of bumping it to third level. Since the caster has to contend with concealment and cover, they don't hit often. Many times they have allies that are in front of them engaging me...

Crossbows and why the rules shortchange them.

I too think crossbows are underrated. What if 10' were added onto the range increment of each crossbow and as long as you were in your shortest range, you get either a +1 or +2 to damage to represent the force behind the bolt but since bolts were not as aerodynamic as arrows were, they loose...

    Greater True Strike

I think it is fine as a third level however I wouldn't call it Greater Ally's True Strike since there would need to be a "Lesser" and a "Normal" version. I would snip Greater off the name and call it a day. Or, add Lesser to it, then make a 4th level version which is good for a few rounds...

    Pesky little Balor

That's great to hear that you won and had a good time although I do tend to agree that your DM didn't do all his homework. Hopefully he doesn't harbor any grudges since your party walked all over his critters. I know there have been times in the past where I make a (IMO) bitching and well...
