New Design & Development: Paladin Smites!

Don't be obtuse. I'm referring to "aggro-management" abilities, not random effects like Confusion.

World of Warcraft specifically. WoW paladins are notoriously weak unless they are healing and supporting a group.

New Design & Development: Paladin Smites!

Judgment of Light. Not exactly the same thing, but similar effect. Wow's popularity is due to easy levelling, casual friendly gameplay, an extremely smooth combat system (relative to other mmo's), and a highly polished world. Not mechanics and game balance. See my post above as to my concerns...

New Design & Development: Paladin Smites!

I admit I like the epic smite ability. As you said, very holy warriorish even though as a rule I don't like "taunt" abilities in my PnP. There are many other smites available? Well then perhaps I'm a bit premature. My discomfort stems from the obvious convergence with online RPG-style...

New Design & Development: Paladin Smites!

Not at all. I'm not saying the paladin should be of no use to his fellow party members, nor that he has never had support abilities. Paladins can and should help allies. However it shouldn't be their main purpose. They're not bards. Or at least they weren't.

New Design & Development: Paladin Smites!

*Shakes head sadly* Roleplaying, where art thou? No offense meant, but this line of thought is precisely what is turning me off from the latest incarnations of D&D.

Explain to me why a paladin needs to buff party members in order to be considered a leader.

New Design & Development: Paladin Smites!

I fully agree with Celtavian. It's as if the designers have spent their time hanging out on the WoW paladin boards looking for ideas. It's not the game mechanics that have players flocking to MMORPG's. It's the convenience of sitting down at your computer (pantsless, if you wish) and hanging...

Why the fear and hatred of Disjunction?

Been away on vacation, else I'd have replied sooner ;) And the crux of your argument is that equipment should be just equipment. In that case, sure. My +5 sword can be replaced no problem. However, if you as DM introduce Lightbringer, the Legendary Holy Sword that the Demigod Holyguy used to...

Why the fear and hatred of Disjunction?

In said "story focused game" have the players make opposed diplomacy rolls with the BBEG. For every failed roll the player loses his henchman, lover/spouse, stronghold, mentor, noble rank, land, citizenship, etc. permanently. That's the equivalent effect of Disjunction in a more item-based game...

*Archtypical Paladin Quandry* The 'Are you a Paladin?' Question.

Guard: "Do you swear to obey the law of Bigcampaigncity at all times?" Barbarian: "Sure" DM: "Woops! You just became lawful, no more rage for you!" How come we never see threads like that?

Need help with defensive paladin build

In my newest group the barbarian got some kickbutt rolls for stats so I decided to go with a defensive-oriented paladin (not using the word t*nk - I refuse). My plan is to go 3 levels of paladin then 4 levels of knight to get Mettle (not using the word t*unt, I refuse) then get the Defender of...

The paladin. A story and a question.

The only version of "evil" the paladin has to deal with is that set forth by his deity and his code. God hates the undead - they are destroyed, no questions asked. No violation of any sort. Monks attacking the paladin were harboring said undead, and attacked out of revenge for its loss, thus...

    101 Truly awful DM tricks

Give them easy treasure. In one game of mine the group had some very bad luck. The monsters were critting like crazy, saving throws were being blown left and right, and the players couldn't buy a decent to-hit roll. At 6th level the players were flat broke from buying and making consumables and...

Rat bastard DM or just the norm? Share your stories.

And hope the DM doesn't teleport them to the Tomb of Horrors in the meantime... :p

What level is appropriate to encounter save or die effects?

My $.02 I'll first use them when the party has access to resurrection/raise dead spells, and even then sparingly. Once the party gets access to their own save or die effects like disintegrate, FoD and so on in a high level campaign then they're fair game.

How to design 4th edition D&D to limit buffing

My suggestion is to have a "buffing routine". Ask the players if they will sacrifice a bit of min-maxing in favor of a package of routine buffs that will be considered to have been cast before every major fight. Jot down the spells, their durations and their effects and have the accumulated...

When should you use really high EL encounters?

Funny this should be asked, I just did one this past weekend. Normally I don't do "killer encounters" but in this case the party made a Wrong Turn (tm) and was headed towards the deeper part of the dungeon before they were ready. The first encounter they had was noticeably tougher than the...
