Did their Favored Enemy options stack up against each other? With the Drow NPC I could easily see Elf as a give-in for both bumps so that it's dealing out +4 damage per hit. Did the PC have Favored Enemy: Elf? If so, that could have easily tipped an advantageous fight (Weak Con + lover level)...

Barbarian is an excellent class if you simply want to dish out the pain and be able to soak up the damage. Personally, I'd take it over the Ambidexterity bonus granted by Tempest/2, but that's just my love for mouth-frothing berzerkers.

And there's no problem at all with that in the slightest. With the Feat requirements, would it be possible to drop a level of Fighter for a level in Barbarian for the Rage's then? The 'freaking out' would improve the insane damage dealing if you could slip a level in.

I would suggest dropping Two Weapon Defense and picking up Improved Buckler Defense. It puts a -1 to your off-hand attack, but the AC Bonus you get to keep from the Buckler far outstrips the bonus from the Feat.
