    Played a Free RPG?

I have played FATE and Shadow of Yesterday. I enjoyed FATE more becaue it is a generic game, but there are some fun things about the SoY game engine that I like. I will check out more free RPGs, but really, the bar has been set pretty high by FATE. Not sure I ever need another game.

    The Poll

My obsession is also relatively recent, but I never play a game anymore that I don't think "I wonder how easy it would be to add aspects to this game? I wonder if I could get the other guys to buy into it?" When that is your reaction to a game, I think you gotta go with the game that has aspects...

Quicker way to PBP - Would this interest you?

I've seen spreadsheet combat judges in google docs used to keep the back and forth down a bit in PbP. The spreadsheet tells you if you hit based on your attack roll, and then tells you the result of the hit based on your damage roll. I also like the FATE 2.0 and Shadow of Yesterday mechanics...

Joke Names you've never used...but want to.

This might be my favorite. Things that man was never meant to eat.....

Joke Names you've never used...but want to.

My favorite wizard of all time was Traztuzumab Venlafaxine, the Ever Vigilant. He was crazy. He had a very itchy trigger finger. Never sneak up on a wizard with an anxiety disorder.

    The Poll

I am currently obsessed with FATE 3.0. So flexible. So fun. Free. And I get to be pretentious and play an indie game. Otherwise it would be 4e. If the options included "Homebrewed hack using bits of 4e and lots of FATE 3.0, with a little Shadow of Yesterday thrown in for extra pretentiousness."...

Tell me about Spirit of the Century

This all is very true, but getting bonuses is much easier in FATE than 4e. The normal curve rolls are interesting, and do tend to cut down on the variance of your rolls, but the range is still there. Not a full game yet. Just a little bit of dice rolling for a playtest with a buddy. We want to...

Tell me about Spirit of the Century

So considering that D&D has a "randomizer range" of 20 (1d20) and SotF/FATE has a randomizer range of 9 (+4 to -4), it seems like each unit in D&D should equal 1/2 unit in SotC, or really close there. Especially in editions earlier than 4e, where a single hit can kill you, the condition track...

Tell me about Spirit of the Century

Could you provide a link to Rel's Power Stunts? I would like to check them out.

Tell me about Spirit of the Century

I too have gotten the SotC bug. I am not a huge fan of straight pulp, but the rules are easy to use for fantasy as well. I think that the biggest problem with the SotC/Fate rules is that they have begun to ruin me for other games. I can't play other games without wanting to houserule in...

Reskinning the Races as each other?

I played a lame (with a limp) human monk who weilded a 3 piece staff who was actually a dwarven warhammer weilding ranger. The reskin can be great fun.

Reskinning the Races as each other?

I basically do this for all my races in my games, I just have never written up such pretty descriptions. ;) I usually go about it a little more free form. The player can decide the RP stuff to fit into the world any way that they like. Then they can decide on any "racial" game mechanics benefits...

What alternate game systems are you trying out if you don't like 4e?

I can hardly beleive that it took 4 pages for someone to list this game. I think that the FATE system will be my go to for gaming as long as I can get people to play it with me. I actually like 4e alot, and just let it be the game what it is. It is a very fun tactical skirmish game that you can...

Magic: the Gathering-like Tarot card game.

In an effort to procrastinate, I have remixed a few games into a playable, printable, head to head deck constructing game that uses a custom Tarot deck for cards. This is basically an adaptation of Yomi whick is slightly simplified and uses some conventions of Magic: the Gathering. For those who...

    Skill challenges: situation vs system

I read the same article. The thing that I didn't like was the addition of a HP mechanic. It complicates the whole thing for no real gain. I have been thinking about this for a while, and my best idea up to this point is that each obstacle in the challenge could be given a certain nimber of...

1001 Tips for Winging It: A GM's Guide to Improvising and Cutting Down on Prep Time

"Club" is fluff. Keep any mechanics you want, just call it "club".

1001 Tips for Winging It: A GM's Guide to Improvising and Cutting Down on Prep Time

Not really throwing out the rules, just throwing out the specifics, or at least the fluff specifics. Since you plan a major reskin of the entire system, this is what you will be doing anyway. The difference is that you don't set fluff until play, instead of trying to reskin before play.

1001 Tips for Winging It: A GM's Guide to Improvising and Cutting Down on Prep Time

Statblocks, no fluff. I love the reskin. Since you typically have to do a lot of improv for descriptions at the table anyway, what I do is stat out several level appropriate encounters, and give them no fluff at all. I usually have a generic rabble, a set of soldiers, a generic "spellcaster"...

    Your experiences with PBP?

I have been involved in 4 different PbP games. They have all died after about 3 months due to slow posting. I am not sure how to combat this problem. My most recent was cut short because the DM had a baby. This would have cut a face to face game short too. I really like the meduim for role...

1001 Tips for Winging It: A GM's Guide to Improvising and Cutting Down on Prep Time

    4) Create a few generic characters that you can reskin into whatever you want during play. Got a soldier type generic? He can become a caravan guard, an ogre whelp, an arogant noble, or any number of things. 5) Create several "drag-and-drop" encounters that are both easily scalable and context...
