Book of Exalted Deeds: A fundamental design philosophy shift at WotC?

Folks, all I'm trying to say is that if the mondo-powered feat requires getting smoochies from a nymph, then it seems fairly obvious that if you want the feat, you have to a) find a nymph, and b) persuade her to give you smoochies. That's not a "drawback". It's not an attempt to force...

Book of Exalted Deeds: A fundamental design philosophy shift at WotC?

True, but I'm not sure that's what's happening here. The problem with the older mechanics is that they're "give me a hamburger today and I will gladly pay you Tuesday" rules. You get neat benefits now for promising to engage in possibly inconvenient behavior later. There are players for whom...

Book of Exalted Deeds: A fundamental design philosophy shift at WotC?

What I find interesting about Nymph's Kiss is that it gives you a major gameplay reward for forfilling a goal that can only be accomplished through roleplaying. That's a very interesting carrot to dangle in front of a player who focuses on tactics and character improvement. cheers,

MP Strongholds & Dynasties vs. Atlas' Dynasties & Demagues?

I haven't really looked at Strongholds and Dynasties yet, but like other folks who have posted here my sense is that it's a kingdom-building book. Dynasties & Demagogues is more about PCs and NPCs taking the kingdom away from its soon-to-be-previous owners. :) I'm hoping that --...

I agree with Teflon Billy too. :) FWIW, the bad guys are on the light side for a reason -- as TB figured out, they're in the adventure to move the story along, not be its centerpiece. My biggest worry was that a group of new players might get in over their head and not have the time or mental...

If I ran an RPG company I would make_________.

As an independent writer, I'm doing more or less what I want to do, and getting closer to satisfied with how I do it. To me, "having a company" means having a real budget to play with, at which point I'd going after the premium and super-premium game market with a vengeance. I want to build...

    D&D Miniatures really take off

I'll bet you an owlbear that mass-market retailers said, "No thanks, the random packs are selling just fine on their own." (It wouldn't be independent retailers -- we're not organized enough to give that kind of feedback.) The reason you want to skip doing fixed packs is that it represents...

Saving EnWorld Brainstorm (long-term less-technical discussion)

Couple of general thoughts. I like the brainstorminess of your initial post, BTW, Graf -- wish I had some gonzo ideas to add to it, but I'm more in evaluate mode at the moment. I don't think looking for cheaper services is an answer per se. It's always nice to save money, but the first business...

    [ENWORLD] What can we do!?!?

Okay, let me just get this out of the way. Russ, I'm pissed. $1600 is chump change, and if you'd spoken up even a week ago this would be easy. Put me down for $100 -- I've got it ready to go as Paypal, credit card or check, so just tell me where to send it. However, I expect you to do the...

    The consolidation going on

That's a fair point, and I think that you're right that the situation is a little different with WotC as opposed to other publishers. They're the baseline, in many ways the rabbit that all the hounds on the track are chasing. There's no way you're going to "beat" the rabbit, so your goal is to...
