At least we can agree on no more half-casters. We could use like three fewer already. I hate that concept.

You said fantasy worlds, not D&D. You said fantasy worlds have classes that fall into a certain slot. That's what I was responding to. Those are archetypes not classes. The Knights of the Round Table, the Peers of Charlemagne, the Three Musketeers, etc didn't all have the same capabilities...

Please locate for me a story where someone raves about how great it was their their Paladin fell for an action they didn't know the DM decided was evil. One provided by someone not a member of this community and not one told by the DM that did the deed; one from the player.

Okay, this has absolutely nothing to do with superheroes aside from attempting to invoke some negative feelings in certain people on the board. Not all fantasy worlds have or need classes. Not all fantasy games have or need classes. What class were Frodo and Sam? What class was Conan (Nope, not...

D&D (2024) DMG 5.5 - the return of bespoke magical items?

Then no, I really don't have any viable means of contributing. It's either do something not fun to me or the DM punishes someone else for me trying to have fun.

what if I don't want to be someone else's bodyguard but do want to stab fools?

Not to me. To me they're a prefab toolbox that start building my character concept off of.

    D&D (2024) I have the DMG. AMA!

I had a Pact of the Blade Warlock who was a cinnamon roll of a guy whose dagger was a cursed athame that convinced him it was his grandma's soul stuck in a dagger. It kept trying to tempt him to evil, but he was also convinced that grandma was going a bit senile and it was his job to be like 'no...

But we aren't allowed to have new classes anymore. Just a handful of subclasses ever few months. I'm more a fan of letting classes be broad concepts that the player then customizes and flavors anyway. Maybe god doesn't believe in me, but I believe in them SO HARD regardless of how badly I'm...

And that's what kept me from playing... well Paladins and Monks, because clerics already had prep-casting to keep me away from them. I think things that keep players from playing classes they might otherwise like is a huge detriment to the game.

And I'd rather the option that gives DMs this kind of punitive power not be presented to new, impressionable DMs. Just like I don't want the kind of 'DM is the last word' language to be included either. Not all options are good to have endorsed by the designers.

In-setting authorities can't arbitrarily do mechanical harm to the character with no roll or recourse.

I'd rather the game just back off that concept by default and add it back in where they actually mean to shut off paths to story.

If I tell you there will be consequences for taking more than one piece of Halloween candy, then hold up a hammer, I'm certainly taking control of your actions. That's what I meant by threat of metaphyscial force.

I honestly didn't know what it was until decades after leaving the fandom because there were no more costumed freaks with fun schticks, only a bunch of angry 90's antiheroes.

Ugh. The first game I ever played. Dragonlance. Paladine would simply not leave us alone. None of us even worshipped his old man cosplaying butt. It's the reason the third game I ever partook in, I DMed, just to show the dude you didn't need to choke-chain players into doing the 'right'...

To be fair to Crawford, that comes with the mantle of Sage.

Yeah, and that choice greatly flattens what stories you can tell based on faith because in such worlds, religious faith is replaced by personal faith since you can never not be certain.
