    Gnomes and 4E

I'm reminded of an old Dragon cartoon during the holiday season, wherein a troll stirring a pot sang: "Oh there's no race like gnome for the hollandaise..." ;)

Dwarven Weapon Training and Superior Weapons

Hmm. One thing I wanted to do was make clerics a Wis primary class, so all their weapon powers would be something like "Attack: Wis vs AC." For example, Righteous Brand would be Wis vs AC, 1d[W] damage, target ally gets a bonus to his foe equal to Str mod. Anyway, this would naturally make...

    D&D 4E 4E updates/errata posted today 1/20/2009

The one I noticed was Jagged Weapon. Before the update, it didn't specify "save ends," and IMO it clealry should have it, but our DM didn't think so :) . We won that fight, and the swordmage picked up the jagged sword, eyes alight with glee. :)

    Druid...now THAT's a controller!

I ran a convention game this passed weekend. One of the PCs was a level 2 elf predator druid. I made the character with Fleet Pursuit, so movement was through the roof! Pounce was great fun to see in action. She was the only character to go down in the fight, however, so I'm not too...

    Gnomes and 4E

It seems to me that they're playing up the sly, stealthy, manipulative aspects of gnomes in 4e, so that may be why. :) And also, all gnomes are irredeemably evil. ;) You know, I'm not sure if we'll get a full-blown illusionist class, not when what they do can be pretty much replicated by...

    Help me understand the paladin.

I wouldn't call it tweaking, but my solution is to make paladins Cha primary, Str secondary if they are attack-oriented pallies and Wis secondary if they are defense-oriented pallies. One build for the defense-oriented pally basically lets them use Enfeebling Strike as an OA. So far, all of...

    Playing Dhampyr

Indeed. :) "Feat" actually wouldn't be a bad name for what are now referred to as "Exploits." What would replace the name of feats? Enhancements perhaps. I can't think of a good reason not to make it reliable. It doesn't sound like it would hurt anything too much if it was.

    WotC Mailbag Podcast up

Thinking more on it, much like how animal companions for beastmaster rangers can do different things depending on what type of beast they are, perhaps this minion-controller could have different types of henchmen. I think basing them off of monster roles would be best. So perhaps the...

    WotC Mailbag Podcast up

When they mentioned this, I immediately thought of a martial controller, a mastermind type of guy sending minions into battle. It would be kinda like a beastmaster ranger, maybe a little invoker thrown in. I think it would be cool if these minions were called henchmen. ;) The impression I got...

    Please cure my 4e illiteracy

At its heart, boiling everything down into the essential bits, all a skill challenge is, really, is the group accumulating so many successes on a series of skill checks before accumulating three failures. The more successes you need, the more difficult the skill challenge. There a whole lot of...

Leaders, which is the most interesting?

I feel bards and warlords have a lot going for them, in terms of the variety of things they do on the battlefield, the fluff, and the general principles of their design.

Fudging the Numbers in 3ed - Forked from: Why do you keep playing 4e?

Reading the phrase you quoted, he's not saying math-fudging is unique to 4e. He's saying that it's a lot easier for him to fudge the math in 4e than it was in 3e. For my part, I agree with him. Sure, in 3e you could just go ahead and give a fey monster craploads of hitpoints (just throwing...

Why do you keep playing 4e?

For me there's a certain delight in being able to predict how difficult an encounter would be, which 4e is able to do in most cases. In addiiton, there's also some level of enjoyment by thinking up the various adversaries PCs could meet and the dynamic encounters that result. An encounter with...

Why do you keep playing 4e?

I like the cosmology, gods, and the way they revamped some monsters. The core setting they've made is mythically D&D IMO. I like the tactical combats. Lots of movement and things are very dynamic. I also like how there are many ways for PCs to work together and set things up for other PCs...

    Preview: The Warden

If there is a secondary striker role about them, it seems more about enhanced mobility than it is doling out the damage. But certainly, rangers and rogues have little to worry about with respect to wardens supplanting them as the group's main striker. :)

How would you model squad-level mass combat in 4e?

Neat! I would probably give them a damaging aura (representing the various weapon strikes they would do if someone got too close) to make them more swarm like, but it's not necessary. I think the swarm idea is a great way to reflect how an army could challenge a dragon. If the dragon is, say...

How Do You Handle "Kicker" Damage?

Okay, so after all this back and forth I've narrowed down two questions for me. 1) Does regeneration bestowed by a cleric power with the healing keyword benefit from Healer's Lore? 2) Divinity feats allow PCs with the Channel Divinity class feature to learn other uses for the Channel...

How Do You Handle "Kicker" Damage?

*chuckles* Well, that might do it. :) I think we're just going to have to amicably disagree on this. :) I look at phrases like "Some clerics/paladins learn other uses for this feature..." and think "Oh, it's just another way to use the class feature they already have." I see where you're...

How Do You Handle "Kicker" Damage?

We have completely differently DMing philosophies, I think. :)
