Semi-Rant: Maturity and dumbing down a game

As I was re-reading through this thread, this comment stood out. I'm almost 100% sure anyone who you've gamed with wouldn't like being lumped in as the Lowest Denominator. If you talk like this about your gaming circle, you're likely to lose more gamers than you collect.

I Love Gaming but I Hate Gamers!

I find myself in complete agreement, although for slightly different reasons. I've largely given up on the hobby thanks to the various tables I've sat at. I'm extremely picky about who I game with, when I game at all. It's a bitter, bitter lesson learned.

Semi-Rant: Maturity and dumbing down a game

In a "narrativistic" game like Dremmen espouses as the platonic ideal, there is a heavy burden on the DM to create and maintain that environment. In my own humble gaming experiences, I've yet to see a single gamer that can live up to Dremmen's idea of the "one true way," much less an entire...

    It's Not Just Gamers

Because the hero's journey was perfected with Beowulf, Star Wars and The Matrix were clearly big fat wastes of time. Well, the second and third Matrix movies definitely. ;)

A major theme in western inspired stories is land rights. Whether for grazing, minerals/resources, farming, water, whatever, conflict over land and its uses is a surefire plot hook. Or give them a cargo wagon named Serenity and chronicle their wacky adventures smuggling goods and visiting...

    Why did you start DMing?

Because no one else wanted to, and I turned out to be very, very good at it.

    9 players. Help.

Either get an assistant DM or split the group in half and run two concurrent campaigns. Nine players at once is great for convention gaming, but is rarely sustainable for regular campaigns.
