    Are Gognards killing D&D?

Here's wikipedia on grognard - it's usage here is just one of several. That article also links to an essay by Greg Costikyan where he explains how Grognard Capture can happen to a game. I think this is one of Wizards' worries with D&D. Whenever someone brings up "New Coke" here I remember...

    Are Gognards killing D&D?

I'm 41, I started playing D&D in 78, left it in 85 to play other systems, and returned in 2000. I'm quite happy with most of what they've revealed about 4e. I'm more worried about how successful the implementation will be than where they're going with it. I don't see much of a correlation...

    Mike Mearls comments on design

Fair enough, I'll shut up about it here.

    Mike Mearls comments on design

Sorry, no I don't. Bigby & partners were just as much core fluff as Golden Wyvern. Turning "Golden Wyvern Adept" into "Shaping adept" is more difficult than say "Tenser's Floating Disk" to "Floating Disk", sure. Just because they could be removed more easily doesn't change their status.

    Mike Mearls comments on design

But similar things to Golden Wyvern were all through the spells: Bigby, Tenser and Mordenkainen seemed to be part of every game world. I'm inclined to put wizards spell books and costless material components are pretty similar - the spell component pouch exists so that players can ignore a piece...

WoTC_krg posts on game design theory

(To moderators - not sure where to post this.) I've only just read some of Robert Gutschera's (WotC_krg) Gleemax blog. He's a mathematician that's employed by Wizards R&D development. This is tangentially related to 4e - mostly he's talking about MtG - but I found these interesting both from...

D&D 4E Post here if you ARE going to 4E!

I'm planning on going to 4e - almost everything they've revealed sounds good to me! Of course, just because they have the right intent doesn't mean their implementation will succeed, and I'm getting a bit worried about how much of it still seems to be in flux.

    A Big Surprise??

The spoiler post on Gleemax says: But from the other previews (ie Wizard's implements, 4 types of Warlocks vs the three we've been told about on Gleemax) Races and Classes already seems to be out of date. I'm not sure the voices can be trusted.

Design & Development: Magic Item Levels

The +6 wand that was mentioned at Gencon told me that +X items were still in the game. Now that they've revealed that the "new math" is a steady 0.5*level bonus to attack rolls and defenses, that wand worries me a bit. It's equivalent to giving the wielder a 12 level bonus. Is there a rule that...

OK, we're gettng a little annoyed here!

My feeling is that real discussion, debate and intellectual process almost never happen in online forums. They decay into flame wars unless separated out into different boards/newsgroups, and strong moderation keeps things polite but eventually eliminates dissenters. Of course, if this belief...

OK, we're gettng a little annoyed here!

One suggestion: posters creating a thread should be allowed to tag the thread as [Pro-4e], [Anti-4e] or neither. This will be a guide to responders about where the original poster wants the discussion to go, and allow moderators to determine who is making problems. There are people who want to...

    D&D 4E Flying in 4e

One small hint may have been in the Spined Devil preview. The 3e version has a Flight 100 ft (Poor), the 4e version just has Fly 7 (=35ft in 3e terms). So perhaps, 4e flight has no maneuverability but is generally slower?

Let's Hear it for Wizard in Armor!

But he did shout "Blood and souls for my lord Arioch!" a lot. Perhaps he's more a 4e warlock than wizard?

    What would Gary do?

Why is it never "What would Dave do?"

    Spells using a Point Pool?

Good. Would you please ask him for his playtest materials? You can post them here since you haven't signed any NDAs, and if he's telling the truth he's already broken his. We'd all love to see them.

    What is "Iconic Fantasy"

I was happy to read in the introduction to Star Wars Saga where it said "Star Wars is space fantasy at it's best..." I'd put it in the mosaic.

    What is "Iconic Fantasy"

When used in that sense it seems to mean "containing the races and classes of AD&D 1st Ed." I'm not sure it's necessarily wrong, since I think a whole lot of modern EBP(*) fantasy originates from AD&D rather than LotR. I don't agree with the AD&D definition, though, because I started playing...

    Give me choices!

I think the tinker/artificier gnome is a good identity, but it has a mechanical problem - if you present a race that can make lots of cool toys, you need to provide rules for how players can make those cool toys. I suspect that might be why the full gnome write-up will be in a later PHB, along...

New Design & Development: Paladin Smites!

Paladin 1, Paladin 13, Paladin 27: they're all available at odd levels. It may just a coincidence, or perhaps it's to the SW Saga system, with characters getting powers at odd levels and feats at even ones? One of the Gencon revelations was 25th level spells, but there may not be 24th or 26th...
