Staff Fighting and Dual Implement Spellcaster

Yes. Moreover, the character builder allows this and attributes the damage bonus accordingly.

Take a chill pill and read the OP. Since the OP is explicitely talking about point buy chargen I didn't feel the need to qualify my response by stating that I too was talking about the point buy rules. :erm:

    Simple question about secondary damage

I'm reasonably certain that many powers don't. Grasping shadows (not to be confused with grasping shards) is already among the better level 1 wizard encounter spells, but that change would up the static damage considerably.

Grasp of the Grave - are miss and hit virtually the same?

If all Grasp did was a single round of auto damage and Daze then it would be a pretty sub-par Wizard 5 daily given the other options available. But I agree that the utility of all powers is dependant on a number of factors, that's essentially my point. It's also the same point I made about...

Grasp of the Grave - are miss and hit virtually the same?

It is because the composition of the party, the monsters and the terrain can significantly alter the advantage of the power. Yes, I've used Grasp of the Grave, Stinking Cloud and Visions of Avarice on several occasions. In my experience, Stinking Cloud is the most universally effective due to...

    Magical Weapons as Implements

No, because a quaterstaff is a two handed weapon. Yes, because both of these abilities relate to the staff as an impliment and not as a weapon. I would suggest no, because Staff Fighting relates to the staff as a weapon, and more specifically as a double weapon. Personally, my solution is to...

Grasp of the Grave - are miss and hit virtually the same?

It's very situational since you need some way to keep enemies within the radius (may or may not be a challenge depending on circumstances. And the damage is necrotic, which is among the most frequently resisted. Perhaps the best approach is to target a large area which covers your own party...

Holy cow my party has 3 strikers in it

Ok, you win. If the DMG says something then it must be true and we can't possibly be right if our experience suggests otherwise. Wait a moment, doesn't pg. 10 of the DMG also say this: "The absense of a striker is perhaps the easiest to cover. The defender and controller might need to find...

Visions of Avarice trivializes melee encounters?

Web has some advantages. Visions takes a minnor action to sustain and a minor action to repeat the attack while Web is a fire and forget daily. PLus Web produces difficult terrain. Whic is not to say that I wouldn't usually still rather have Visions, only that there are certain situations...

    Hit point madness!?!

In 4E the hit point calculations for PCs and monsters alike use the full Con score, not the Con mod.

    equivalancy table

4th Ed doesn't allow for more than one stat at 8 and the rest at 10 as a minimum without house rules. One assumes that situations like this are one fo the reasons - having one weak stat can be interesting, dumping half of every pair for extra ability points is pure munchkin and the DM really...

Stacking penalties, solos, and . . . *sigh* sadness. :(

In my experience solos work better a few levels above that of the party. An equal level solo, even with a few friends, just isn't much of a threat. Out f interest, what were the other monsters doing why the party was focusing fire on the dragon? Were they not able to interfer or make use of the...

    Magical Weapons as Implements

As an aside, he'd be much better off with a +2 Staff of Ruin. He gets +2d10 on a crit instead of +2d12, but he'll be getting +4 damage on every attack instead of just +2. And since it's an impliment it avoids the whole issue.

Holy cow my party has 3 strikers in it

You're assuming that the dwarf wizard regularly uses his second wind. You're also assuming that one extra standard action for the wizard makes all the difference in a fight, which is strange given how little respect you have for the wizard's ability to deal damage and given taht the potent...

Holy cow my party has 3 strikers in it

Speak for yourself. My wizard is a cannon, and typically takes less damage than everyone else in a fight. Hardly. Looking at the sheets for my group the wizard has the same AC as the shield using cleric with maxed Int swordmage adn the full plate + large shield using fighter coming in first and...

    Simple question about secondary damage

As a rule, only add enhancement (or other) modifiers if the damage is rolled, and only add ability modifiers is specifically told to do so. Flaming Sphere does 1d4 + Int + enhancement Leaving Visions of Ruin does 2d8 + Int + enhancement Hitting the sorcerer using Burning Spray does Str mod...

Holy cow my party has 3 strikers in it

Eh? Have you played a controller, because that's pretty much not the case. Real life example with one of my current groups: Fighter does d10+6 at-will (av 12) and has an encounter power inflicting 2d10+10 (av 21) both against single targets. Wizard does d6+6 at-will (av 10, burst 1 - minimum...

Holy cow my party has 3 strikers in it

Catching 3+ enemies is pretty easy. I rarely target less than that with scorching burst or thunderwave, and never less than that with encounter or daily spells. Last night I caught six enemies in range of fire shroud and actually hit four of them. If I'm forced to target only 2 enemies it's...
