Exactly :) MT does this, you just start up a MT instance and File->Start Server, then have other players connect with File->Connect to server from your local network or across the internet. Please feel free to contact me directly (information is in my profile, or PM me at the rptools forums)...

I fully agree. We (rptools.net) are in the process of making a bunch of screencast tutorials, which would give you the same effect. You can watch on your own time, no time coordination, nothing to install.

When you say mapping programs, do you mean programs whose end product is a raster image (like jpg, png, or whatever), or a virtual space to move tokens on a background map ?

MapTool To be fair, although MapTool supports building maps on-the-fly, it's primary function is a map _sharing_ tool, not a map making tool :)
