transcript july 21, 2008 hsbro earnings conference call and business overview

You know, its one thing that D&D is, in the eyes of major financial institutions, a non-issue. Its another that 'Littlest Pet Shop' apparently *is* an issue. That sorta stings a bit. ;)

How much stuff do your players buy?

I DM, and own the majority of the 3.5 books... and I expect I'll end up owning the majority of the 4E books as well. Of the other folks I play with... the ones who DM regularly tend to have the majority of the books, or have ready access to em (since the majority have been college students...

What do you expect from a free product vs one you pay for?

Free: Something entertaining, that has at least been tried out in someone's home game. I also expect to have to house rule it at least a bit for my game... I don't always have to, but I *expect* I'll have to. I expect there to be some errors, perhaps even major ones. Pay: Something that has...

How many character sheets through the life of a PC?

Between crappy handwriting and a tendency for sheets of paper in my possession to be crumbled, torn, or lost within minutes... I've switched to doing everything on my computer, and just having my laptop at the game (with a recent, printed copy of the sheet handy, just in case the laptop dies)...

Tips/ideas wanted for running a royal ball/banquet situation

All depends on a few things. 1) Obviously, attractiveness plays a part. 2) What the noble is looking for - a dance? Sex? Or an actual relationship? In the first case, its certainly acceptable - guest of honor and all that. In the second, and especially in the third, it depends on social...

Tips/ideas wanted for running a royal ball/banquet situation

Another thought (admittedly, lifted from the Firefly episode Shindig)... The PCs are now respectable enough to get in to this ball. Other folks are not. Said other folks may desire the ear of someone at the ball, and approach the PCs to act as middlemen.

Tips/ideas wanted for running a royal ball/banquet situation

Well, if the banquet was already slated and the PCs are being invited... what was the original purpose of the banquet? Was someone else to be honored, and, if so, are they going to feel slighted if they lose or have to share the limelight? As far as who would make the proclamation - are they...

How do you like your action points?

Personally, I think 'One per session' would be far more 'stupid and arbitrary'. What if your session is an 8 or 12 hour, once a month marathon, and my group plays 3 hour games once a week? What if we both played sessions of equal length, but my group took more breaks, did more non-encounter...

How do you like your action points?

I'm a resource hoarder in almost any sort of game - couldn't play casters in 3.5, for instance. Use stealth and melee weapons in games like Deus Ex, not for the challenge, but because I don't want to waste bullets from something as basic as a pistol. I've gotten *better*, but... I like 4E's...

    Least Favorite (Core) D&D Race

Out of all of those? Half-orcs. Why? Two reasons. 1) The big one is that the majority of half-orc backgrounds seem to involve rape. Not unlike Drizzt, this might be an acceptable background in moderation, but when it's the standard, it becomes very, very uninteresting as a background...

    Your ideal setting

My ideal setting would probably be pretty close to Eberron - even more than various ideas I've come up with, that's always struck me as awesome. The things I love from it (and plan to incorporate in a homebrew I've been toying with): 1) PCs are heroes. I won't run a setting with tons of...

    DM and/or player?

At the moment, I'd say about an even split (which is what I selected). In my group, we basically have two DMs, myself and another guy. Usually, I'll DM a campaign for a while, then he'll do his game. We've also alternated from week to week. We're currently trying to convince a third player...

    Gnomes: Monster or PC (Poll)

Well, given that even in core (meaning the three main books) there's an easy way to play a Gnome PC... I don't see them as being restricted from being a PC race. I'd certainly allow them as a standard PC race for my game, and I'd allow most of the other races in the back of the Monster Manual...

Online play - what do you use?

Fantasy Grounds is fine, but Maptool is good as well. Given that one's free and the other isn't... The one thing I miss is having actual dice to roll in Maptool. I'm not a huge fan of typing out dice rolls. When I DM, I roll my own dice, just because I find it to be much quicker and simpler...

    Sell me on Half-Elves

Ok. Want to know why the 4E Half-Elf is awesome? Take your 3.5 player coming in to 4E. The guy at your table who had to have a multiclass build with three or four different classes, minimum. Even though you were only level 5. The guy who mocked people for playing the weak and lowly...

Would that mean fewer 4E complaint threads? 'cause that might be worth it... plus, think of the XP I'd get...

My Experience of 4e Marketing Failing

It isn't all that logical to expect WotC to train every employee that might sell their product. On the other hand, it wouldn't hurt to include a little memo to the retailers carrying your product that says, 'This is what we'd like your sales people/cashiers to recommend to customers looking for...

Marketing: How would you have done it?

I'll say in advance... this one is a tad long-winded. Sue me - I'm getting a degree in this sort of stuff, I like thinking about it. ;) Well, here's a question. Are we looking at marketing as a 'What would have been best if you're marketing to people here at EN World'? Or 'What would have...

Marketing: How would you have done it?

Well, nobody gave me a budget to work with, so I went big ;). And yes - any fantasy movie would work. I picked LotR 'cause: :1: Everyone here would know the scene I was talking about :2: I actually just watched all three movies again (personally, I think they'd work a lot better with 4E...
