The new, shiny "Stuff I Have/Would Ban" thread!

Arrows are consumable items. Encounter or daily items are also "consumable items" they just recharge for free. So what if it costs more gold if it is making your encounters more successful? That's the whole point of the game isn't it? What else are you going to spend your gold on? Sure, they are...

The new, shiny "Stuff I Have/Would Ban" thread!

Ah, well, good point, but I'd still take a 1/day item that gave me a +2 damage for an entire encounter over a daily item that gave me a +1d6 if I manage to hit by the end of my next turn. So yeah, I didn't fully understand how they worked, but now that I do fully understand, they're still miles...

The new, shiny "Stuff I Have/Would Ban" thread!

LOL, sure, if by "desirable" you mean "as opposed to wearing nothing at all on my arms" and if by "useful" you mean "occasionally does something remotely arguably beneficial" and if by "questionable" you mean "not really better than nothing at all." I mean you seriously want to argue that an...

The new, shiny "Stuff I Have/Would Ban" thread!

I do think the unwillingness to customize due to the desire to use the Character Builder for everything is a pretty serious flaw in the D&D 4e marketing strategy. As I said, I've been a DM for nearly 30 years now, and I have ALWAYS created custom magic items that are specifically intended to...

The new, shiny "Stuff I Have/Would Ban" thread!

I've been playing and DMing D&D since about 1982. In that time I've never banned anything, although I've had a few items banned by other DMs. Reading through this thread it's almost like there are two different interpretations of what is an acceptable reason to ban items. Some of the posters...

Barbarians seem very effective, too effective?

I still play some 3.5e so I think I can do a quick comparison of "standard magic items" to see how 4e compares... My 3.5e characters somehow seem to end up with the following items fairly regularly: - pearls of power - rods of metamagic - rings of protection - +X weapons - rings of spell...

What number should a player have to roll to score a "hit"?

OK, so my level 9 ranger has a +15 to hit with his main melee weapon, and a +13 (usually) to hit with his bow. If I'm reading this right, then for him to hit 70% of the time, that means the "average" monster he should be facing should have an AC of 22. If we assume that he is getting combat...

Barbarians seem very effective, too effective?

Yep, you're right, of course. This is the first 4e character I built and our DM set the rules. I bought the DDI subscription and downloaded the Character Builder because everyone told me that was easiest, and I used the CB to build my ranger, I never used the PHB. Now I feel sorta silly seeing...

Barbarians seem very effective, too effective?

I'm curious. How do you get an 8th level barbarian to str 22 and still be legal? Is there an option that lets you start with 18? I thought you had to have some combination of 16, 14, 13, 12, 11 and 10 to be legal. Maybe I just haven't seen all the character creation options. Mostly I'm curious...

Barbarians seem very effective, too effective?

Keterys, hmmm... using a burst power like "sweeping whirlwind" I'm sure my ranger could rack up some significant damage totals too. All of my damage talk so far has been targeted damage, not burst or aoe damage. Our tank is so good at rounding up the opposition and keeping them where he wants...

Barbarians seem very effective, too effective?

LOL, I clearly am still a noob at this 4e stuff... I doubt I would ever create a charge-optimized DPSer though. Maybe it's just my DMs, but I'm pretty sure the opportunities for me to mount my obsidian steed and charge round after round at exposed bosses would last for, maybe, one encounter...

Barbarians seem very effective, too effective?

Hmm... 100+ damage in a single round with no action point? Our barbarian has never come close to that at level 9. I'll be sure to pass that on since he prides himself on being an expert at the game. I'm assuming something special has to happen for him to get that high, it's not going to happen...

Barbarians seem very effective, too effective?

While I'm here, if anyone has an opinion, I'd like to get some thoughts on how effective other ranger players have found "Spitting Cobra Stance" to be. I've only used it once so far, and wasn't overwhelmed with it, but it was a small encounter. Also, if anyone else has ever had a spiked chain...

Barbarians seem very effective, too effective?

I play a 9th level spiked-chain wielding ranger. Spiked chain is a flavor choice, not a character optimization choice. I am one of those rare birds who actually wants to play an interesting character instead of following the pure optimization paths. Our barbarian in the party is a pretty...

Minions are alien visitors from another kind of game

I've only just begun reading about "minions" and like a lot of the other 4e rules, I don't like them because they seem to be an arbitrary means for the game designers to solve a problem the easiest way possible. They want a particular effect in the game (large attack by a horde of easily...

    Illusions

I have mixed feelings about having a separate "Illusionist" class. I've been playing D&D for over 25 years, so I've seen a lot of ideas come and go. If I recall correctly the original "Illusionist" was introduced as a separate class in the first "Unearthed Arcana" supplement. I was intrigued by...
