    Death at WotC

Well, maybe DDI isn't sunk for good, but losing a senior project manager isn't going to get the project done any faster, and tends to derail these things. It certainly doesn't bode well for the project. As for being in poor taste: What you want me to do? Break down in tears because some...

    Death at WotC

Well DDI definitely isn't going to happen now.

Pathfinder 1E Paizo Adventure Path Subscription Stinker

Paizo has been pretty open about what's going on. This year has been rough for them, because of WOTC's dithering with the GSL and 4E announcements meant a late start to certain projects (such as the RPG), and consequently they've fallen behind in their publishing schedule. If you'd been paying...

August RPG Book Club: Classic Monsters Revisted

I really enjoyed Classic Monsters Revisted, and I hope that paizo does many more books like this. Over on the paizo boards some of us have been agitating for a overhaul for the undead creation rules (we'd like it to be like the construct and magic item creation processes, with minimum caster...

Adventure Paths: Which Ones Are You Enjoying?

Some Adventure Paths you've forgotten include The Freeport Trilogy (which leads easily into Crises in Freeport), and Privateer Press' Witchfire Trilogy. I'm sure there are more. I wouldn't include the boxed sets of modules released by Goodman Games, as the included adventures are not connected...

Taking bets on the launch of DDI

I wouldn't put real money on any specific date, but I expect by the end of this year WOTC will announce that DDI will be free but will not include most of the promised features, and will have been canceled by this time next year. I have zero faith in WOTC's ability to pull this off.

DMing your way into a corner

You should rent and watch the series Deadwood. It deals with intrigues within a growing town very skillfully, and is chock full of ideas to pay homage to. Plus it has plenty of examples of Some quick plot ideas stolen from what I remember of Deadwood: A famous adventurer and his cohort...

    Female gamers: Weal or woe?

:hmm: Okay, whatever, not going to argue the point with you. I just...you're implying that assuming by "hyper-competitive jackasses" meant acting like a cartoon character which is itself a ridiculous exaggeration is a reasonable assumption. And yeah, I disagree. I think it's rather...

Goodman Games Dungeon Crawl Classics - So which ones are the best?

I found it impossible to understand Into the Wild, the maps just didn't work for me, and I ended up aborting the adventure with a deus ex machina and running something else. It's the only DCC I didn't like, though generally I agree that Harley Stroh writes great stuff. I've run a bunch of...

Forked Thread: Viking Hat vs Social Relationship

Forked from: Female gamers: Weal or woe? Does anyone actually think that the game master has the right, or for that matter the ability, to treat players this way? Why do people always act like this is a reasonable or sensible suggestion? In my current group, we have one vaguely racist and...

    Female gamers: Weal or woe?

See, now this is where I find this kind of debate just gets really contentious. You're really being very insulting and judgmental, and it's hard not to take offense at that. I was being a bit self-deprecating with the "hyper-competitive jackasses" comment, and I guess that was too subtle. You...

    Female gamers: Weal or woe?

I don't want to walk into a firestorm, but I'm not convinced by some of these analogies that are being tossed around. The three analogies I've seen tossed out are: women:men::nerds:normal people women:men::Jews:non-Jews women:men::blacks:whites I'm not really sure I buy any of these as...

That's it; I am done buying minis'!

If you don't want to learn to paint metal miniatures (it's really not hard, it just takes practice) there is a very simple way to use metal minis that anyone can do, and will give you an end-result far superior to the splotchy paint jobs you find on rubbery plastic miniatures. All you need is...

    Pirates vs. Ninjas

A pirate versus a ninja? Ninja wins. Everytime. As proof of this, I offer up Ninja III: The Domination, in which it is definitively stated that only a ninja can stop a ninja. only a ninja can stop a ninja. Here's the opening scene from Ninja III, in which you can clearly see that even modern...

    Why do people hate Elfkind?

I haven't read the whole thread, but I've been playing for twenty years and seen (and participate in) a lot of Elf Hatin' going on. My personal reason for hating elves, and many people seem to share these, are two-fold: 1) Of all the races, Elves have the twinkiest advantages. This has been...

    Female gamers: Weal or woe?

My group is all guys, none of whom are married, half of whom are single. As the DM, I'm sort of loathe to invite women to the game, simply because it does change the dynamic, and I like the dynamic just the way it is. I got a nice little lesson in this just the other week. We couldn't play at...

    Your ideal setting

My current campaign setting is my ideal setting. It's called Mythara, and is based on a blend of Mystara and the Iron Kingdoms. Essentially I've reduced the world to Darokin (Cygnar), the Minrothad Guilds (Pirates), a hobgoblin controlled Glantri (Skorne Empire) and the Isles of Dread (Cryx)...

Coup de Grace vs. Players -- Mean DM or Fair Play?

A few months back the DM of the campaign I play in did a coup de grace on a player character. The PC had been caught by a Hold Person spell in the first round, and was CDG'd the next round. The other three members of the party were all active, unwounded, and we outnumbered our foes (two gnoll...

Anybody do "Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk"?

I'm playing in it right now, and I hate it. The biggest issue for me is the guards at the Tower of War who take 25% of all your treasure. My character is a 9th level, but apparently these guards are too powerful for me to take in a fight, and the dwarf leading them totally outclasses me. It's...

    Dungeon Tiles - Photos

I have multiple sets of each. I lay down a large piece of black felt as a tablecloth, and the tiles don't slide around significantly. I'm not so fond of the pieces with a lot of details, as they rarely have exactly what I want, but I combine the plainer pieces with miniature furniture pieces...
