Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Alpha "crunch" discussion

Just saying that you can use the standard skill system easily by "renaming" # of skill choices to #of skill points/level. All you have to remember is to multiply x4 at 1st level. The numbers are the same, the current Alpha system is a shortcut for auto-maxed skills with a little bonus of more...

Raise Dead: A nice big bone to the simulationists

No idea if it has been mentioned inbetween in this pretty interesting discussion, but if I was looking for a version of Raise Dead that caused less problems, and was "believable" enough still, I'd look at the way the Iron Kingdoms setting handles it. - Raise Dead is a 9th level spell, no other...

Pathfinder OGL/3.5 RPG system from Paizo

Downloaded the Alpha rules, and after a quick browse, I like the way it is going. I wonder if there's going to be a big migration of playtesters from ENW to the Paizo boards, or if there's going to be a Paizo "Eye in the Sky" hanging around here to catch any comments made on the developing rules...

    Pathfinder 1E Paizo Annoucement!

Oh man, I need a job!! How else am I to support such a bold decision? :( But seriously, this is a very daring move...and for my part, I really am curious how it is going to go. I certainly am going to take an interest. Wouldn't surprise me if Paizo will manage to prove wrong all those folks...

Design & Development: Warlord Article UP!

Here you already mentioned something that didn't just annoy people when they discussed it outside of the actual game, but while playing, and for quite a while...the Vancian Magic system of older editions. There's enough players that will curse, complain, and discuss the so-called "fire and...

Design & Development: Warlord Article UP!

Come on Mustrum...you read the 4E forum as much as I do, and you must have noticed the fact that what you just posted is also only true for you (and everybody who thinks like you, of course), while there is PLENTY of posters here who have noted that any fun coming from using some mechanic (so...

    D&D 4E 4e: the new paradigm

Get used to it...the more information WotC reveals about 4E, the more you'll hear "but you haven't seen the complete thing yet, you can't judge the whole game only by a few previews" from a few here if you still are not convinced and have points of criticism. It's a mantra that'll hold until 4E...

Okay, where do you stand on diagonal movement?

You realize that 3E didn't use 1-1-1-1 despite of what you're saying, right? That's why the example of the Sleep burst looks like it looks, it's why they mention that "diagonal lengths and distances are harder to measure" (p. 69, column 1, under Cones) and that to remember to "maintain a...

    D&D 4E 4e: the new paradigm

Well, for each player, it is the length of that list that can differ before his suspension of disbelief breaks. And 4E very obviously adds a lot of the kind of rules that ask the players to "explain them away" to the already long list. For some, it simply stops being fun making up explanations...

Design & Development: Warlord Article UP!

A good example for a Warlord-like character can be found...and I don't mean this as snarky towards the new edition at all...in the anime "Rental Magica". The leader of a group of magicians of different traditions has the ability to predict an opponent's moves and tactics, and direct his group so...

    Diagonal wonkiness scenarios

It's funny to note that there's at least two sides to the folks speaking for the 1-1-1-1 rule. One side that claims "You need to stop thinking in feet, think in squares, 4E will measure out EVERYTHING in squares", and another side that claims "Stop putting real-world importance on the battlemap...

Armor & Coins - please, No.

Basic D&D measured encumbrance in "coins", with 1 coin being a measure of weight and handling at the same time. For a weight comparison, 1 coin was set to be 1/10th of a pound. For example, Plate had an encumbrance of, if I remember correctly, 600 coins.

    D&D 4E 4E sceptics - what do you like?

Right, one more to the list  See, the longer the thread runs, the more positive points 4E can actually accumulate in my mind. ;) - The lessening of the whole buffing race with items. I love interesting magical gadgets and artifacts, but all those stat/save/skill booster items that cropped...

    D&D 4E 4E sceptics - what do you like?

Just wanted to throw a quick "Thanks" inbetween into the thread for all the answers and for keeping the thread on track. :D

    D&D 4E 4E sceptics - what do you like?

Right, two more I nearly forgot... - The supposed changes in focus from Heroic to Paragon to Epic levels. If it's pulled off right, it could be a flashback to Basic D&D, where your character's focus widened with every box. - The multiclassing could be very interesting. I've tried to come up...

    D&D 4E 4E sceptics - what do you like?

Since my fellow german Mustrum "Gummibärchen Ridcully already started a thread where 4E fans could voice their points of doubt about 4E, I thought it would only be prudent to open a thread where 4E sceptics could voice what they find positive about the new edition. So come on, here's your chance...

Trip is an Encounter Power now

No worries, I wasn't trying to discard or attack your opinion, I appreciate it as much as I appreciate D.Shaffer trying to be objective about it. Neither of you was abrasive or offensive, and that's what counts. After all, I have my opinions, too. :) As for your answer, it was the only thing...

Trip is an Encounter Power now

Except that you didn't put a "better/worse" quality judgement on the difference. ;) As an aside, does anybody know what the pressing reasons were for the design team to slap the "provokes AoO" label on the Standing up from Prone action in 3.5? Maybe got a link, or a quote, or something else...

Trip is an Encounter Power now

Ah, thanks...sounds like this is something done by 3.5 again...got to check the handbooks. Standing up from Prone in 3.0 doesn't provoke an AoO, so the whole scene would look different. *digs out 3.5 handbooks to verify this* Edit: Yep, that's a 3.5 symptom. Ah well...
