Why D&D is slowly cutting its own throat.

Exactly. It is either that or move into the WotC barn and say "Moo". I've justed playing again after leaving in the early '80s. I shudder to think what a complete set of rules (and I don't mean just core) costs. I don't feel like a competitive DM if I don't allow at least the Complete *...

Encounter Help Requested (my players stay out)

Wow, lots of good information. I think I'll give them two spot checks, one hard on the approach to the footbridge to detect the ambush, and another more moderate one to negate surprise as the ghoul surges out of the water. The depth of the water shall be such that a standing medium size...

    NPC Indy-type guy

Favored enemy...player character? :) I love your idea. He needs some 'color' though, and a reason for his work. Is he always hunting, or just sometimes? If he were a professor like Indie, the players might run into him in some place really unexpected causing the players to freak out and jump...

    Quick polymorph question.

Naw, use polymorph. Afterall, wildshape is based on it. It's the pain that keeps on giving. Just be prepared to spend an evening reading nothing but alter self and polymorph. Oh and dozens of threads that will make your brain hurt. I used to hate the new D&D, until I gave into my rules...

Encounter Help Requested (my players stay out)

So, a party of 1st levels is crossing a foot bridge (no railings) in the swamp. *tromp* *tromp* *tromp*. Surprise! There's a ghoul under there! During the surprise round, the ghoul tries to drag a character into the water by grabbing an ankle and pulling. What should this be? A trip attack...

Hopefully, someone can find a rule that makes this not work.

A programmed image is a figment. From the definition of figment -

"Out of the Frying Pan"- Book IV - Into the Fire [STORY HOUR COMPLETED - 12/25/06]

That's a big question, considering the volumes you've written. The dwarven citadel incursion really made me feel like I was 'there', deep in a place drenched with history. That it was there before I came, and will be there when I've left. That is the single best feeling I can get from a game...

"Out of the Frying Pan"- Book IV - Into the Fire [STORY HOUR COMPLETED - 12/25/06]

<staggers into the light> I'm in...the present? How strange. I've been reading your story hour for a while now and wanted to give you the obligatory thank you and keep it going post. I love your critical hits table. I ran the idea past my players of using it but they got all quiet and just...

Just wanted to say I'm enjoying your story hour - and I'm a die hard Western European kinda guy. :) Nice pacing.

    Druid with emphasis on Wildshape

Straight Druid is proving to be a lot of fun, and quite powerful (8th so far). Natural Spell is a must so you can cast while wildshaped. I need a source with more beasts to wildshape into. The core books are kinda light in flyers I think. Pickup a monk's belt for added melee goodness.

    Natural Attack + Monk

Thanks for the detailed workup. :) Shouldn't my unarmed strikes do 2d6 base since I'm a large, 5th level monk for purposes of damage ? Thanks again.

8th - sorry didn't realize it would matter.

    Natural Attack + Monk

In a related question, can anyone tell me please what is the full attack routine and damage of a druid wildshaped into a dire ape wearing a monk's belt? SRD says "If the character is not a monk, she gains the AC and unarmed damage of a 5th-level monk. "

    Defeat The Vile 5' Step

Based on extensive sca experiences (for whatever they are worth), once you are on an archer or crossbowman that ranged attacker is done shooting as long as you press your attack. D&D is not realistic but if this bothers you I'd say a fair house rule would be that once an archer is struck (not...

    Request for help: Simulacrum

Well, the spell creates an "illusory duplicate", not an adult green dragon, but I see your point. All of the special abilities you mention are associated in the dragon data tables by age. I don't see this information presented anywhere else, so they must be considered first sources. But, the...

Can you ready a move action?

Delving into the 3.5 DMG on page 25 there is a very interesting example involving a sorcerer, a beholder, and the readied action. It is clear from that example that the rules intend the DM to be creative in resolving these kinds of situations. In the example, a sorcerer is trying to use the...

    Request for help: Simulacrum

Well, I'll take a stab at it. An adult green has 20HD, so your creation will have 10HD + 5 levels of sorcerer. Your creation will have the "feats, skill ranks, and special abilities" of a 10HD, or very young green. The adult green abilities scores stand as is. Stays huge. No SR or frightful...

Do the initiative rules discourage parley?

Initially, after reading your post I felt compelled to argue that the rules encourage, or at least don't discourage parley. After reading this thread, however, I'm afraid the only logical choice a poor player can make is to charge headlong into the safety of battle, or risk being immobilized in...
