    D&D 5E Allowing Strength for Bows--unbalanced?

You missed the point. The arrow will not penetrate any further if either Schwaztenegger or I use a 75 lb bow. ETA: The minimum strength requirement mentioned above addresses what you're getting at. But adding damage bonus based on strength means two characters with different strengths can do...

    D&D 5E Allowing Strength for Bows--unbalanced?

Adding strength to damage doesn't make sense to me. An arrow from the same bow shouldn't do more damage if fired from a person with 20 STR vs 13 STR.

    D&D 5E yo yo yo!

Sounds like he's forming a posse. Are we going to go after aficionados of other rule sets?

D&D 5E Would you play or run a game if the party's members are not the protagonists?

One of the best writing analogies I've heard is: A novel (or campaign for RPG purposes) is like a game of chess with the pieces being characters. If you ask the king what the story is, he'll say "It's a story about a clash of mighty kings." If you ask one of the pawns what the story is, he'll...

D&D 5E Polymorph at higher levels - no beasts left?

It means "beast", not "monster". The MM is only a selection of creatures. There's nothing stopping a DM or a player from creating beasts that aren't in the MM.

D&D 5E Any guides on making adventures?

The DMG gives some tips, but nothing beats experience. Don't let inexperience hinder you. Just make something that seems like a good idea. If it works, great. If not, figure out why it didn't work and you'll have learned something about making adventures. Read adventures you've played that...

D&D 5E Fudging: DM vs player preferences

It was a random encounter while traveling. A big reason for the error on my part was the haste in which it was set up. You also bring up something that is rather situational. My players SUCK at tactics*. Most of my table is inexperienced. The most experienced player, who kept them from...

D&D 5E Fudging: DM vs player preferences

I preferred to fudge in this situation because I could make it transparent to the player and keep it in story. The opponents running away in this situation wouldn't have made sense. In the situation, the party was easy prey for this group. Of course, I've made mistakes that couldn't be fudged...

D&D 5E Fudging: DM vs player preferences

Thanks! So what I'm interested in, as a fudging DM, is do the players (in general) have differing feelings toward the types of fudging? How much of the opinions are a fear of being fudged against vs. fudged for? With all the things a DM can do, just asking yes/no, is a pretty broad brush.

D&D 5E Fudging: DM vs player preferences

Has it been discussed exactly what's being fudged? (I confess I haven't followed the various threads very closely.) I'm a fudging DM and I almost never fudge a die roll, when I do it's almost always a damage roll, and always to reduce it. The only time I'll fudge an attack roll is to fudge...

D&D 5E [5E] The few mechanical implications of Alignment

Some of my players worry too much about alignment. I keep telling them don't worry about it, it doesn't really factor into much. I tell them to play how they want to play, if they're not playing your alignment, I might tell them to change it on their sheet. Was it Dragonlance that had the...

    D&D 5E Ravenloft I6- 5th edition recap

Strahd challenged my group as well (6 5th-level PCs), but the cleric rolled terrible for the Holy Symbol. They also faced Strahd twice so the symbol was of no use the second time. Strahd also made good use of his charm to weaken the party. With Strahd's HP regeneration and certain tactical...

    D&D 5E Variant spellcasting

The quickest/easiest way would probably be to increase their spell slots progression. I agree with the prior poster who said everyone will want to play a wizard, then. Personally, I'd be ok with that.

    D&D 5E Variant spellcasting

7 will go a long way to getting the feel you want. My wife plays an arcane trickster and it rubs me the wrong way, but you know... she's my wife. I think you're right about clerics, ours turned out to be the muscle of the group. Limiting cantrips didn't change that fact.

    D&D 5E BardTales- Woeful Table Tales + A Poll

This didn't derail the game, it's also in-game rather than meta, but it still makes me shake my head. Most of my table is completely new to, or very inexperienced with RPGs. The one experienced player, unfortunately, had to recently leave the group, otherwise this never would have happened...

D&D 5E Ditching concentration - did you do it?

I understand from the cantrip thread the flavor you're going for. I did restrict cantrips, but I haven't touched concentration. What is it about concentration that you think is in opposition to the desired flavor?

    D&D 5E A couple of questions

    1) I don't find much difference between combat length in 5E and AD&D. The determining factor in both is the number of combatants and focus of the group. (Do your players know what they want to do by the time it's their turn? Do the spellcasters know how their spells work or do they need to...

D&D 5E Limiting use of cantrips - what are the consequences?

I like this approach. I may try it in my next campaign.
