Starting a new campaign, with new players

I would like to mention that this post just made my day. Also, I suddenly want to run a really, really cliche "meet in a tavern, grizzled old veteran gives you an adventure hook, go out and kill kobolds and goblins and orcs, BBEG is an evil wizard/necromancer/magic-user" sort of adventure now...

What happened to Gygax's Lejendary Adventures?

I haven't played the system itself (though I've heard of it!), but I have bought plenty of out of print books! Google is always your friend, Amazon.com sometimes has OOP books up (but usually at highly inflated prices), eBay has a number of the books up frequently, rpg.net's "Sales! Auctions!"...

Morrus stay out. Okay, fine, you can come in. Everyone else come in too.

While cash is nice as a gift in general, it's not as personal/thoughtful/cool as an actual gift. Of course, it's usually the safest option. I'm in for $5-$10.

Starting a new campaign, with new players

It was great meeting you! Space: 1889 is one of my new favorite settings, now ;) As far as the players, it's hard to say actually. I'll be running things at a gaming club, so it'll be probably a bit of all of the above. Last year, I had only one guy with any real experience, and a bunch of...

    Miniatures or Counters?

If you shop around, you can get miniatures pretty cheap. That being said, I plan on eventually converting over to counters myself, despite having 50-100 decent minis. It's just a thousand times easier to transport, and significantly more convention-friendly! ;)

Starting a new campaign, with new players

I like the idea of tying in a prequel session to the overall plot. If I go with a prequel (still mulling over my options at this point), I'll definitely do that! Tying it into the campaign handout sounds especially cool :) I will say, everyone's replies have managed to give me a bunch of...

Starting a new campaign, with new players

I've actually fallen a bit out of that habit, I need to get back into it. Also, cool example ;)

Starting a new campaign, with new players

Very good point! I've been considering house rules to help reinforce that, actually. In particular, rules for unconsciousness, and a variant of FYIA tokens (slightly NSFW if only because of the F word used once or twice). Hopefully, that'll help keep things upbeat and entertaining. Not that I'm...

Do You Write In Or Modify Your Game Manuals?

I sometimes write stuff in. My 4e PHB is pretty heavily marked up due to errata, actually :) I don't really write too much in game books, though, mostly as I haven't really had much need to. I tend to jot notes into margins in novels and the like, but not so much RPG books.

DM Dilemma - I Need Help, ENWorld! - *UPDATED* - Putting YOUR ideas to work!

Honestly, everyone runs stuff differently. Be careful to not over-prepare, but many people prefer having a lot written out, other prefer to have little. It's all about preference :) You might just be feeling a bit burned out. I'd normally suggest curing it by taking a short break from DMing and...

Why is the original red box so special

I, personally, think it's the best D&D rules system out. It's the game system I primarily play :) (Well, OK, I tend to stick to the Moldvay/Cook/Marsh basic/expert books, but they're close enough to the Mentzer books to be more or less the same) If you want to check out more or less the same...

Starting a new campaign, with new players

Thanks for the input, guys! I think I'll follow something closer to S'mon's example, though the other posts also helped with ideas :D The main thing I'm torn over now is whether to make the first session "part of the campaign," or just make it tangentially related to the plot. Hmm...

DM Dilemma - I Need Help, ENWorld! - *UPDATED* - Putting YOUR ideas to work!

Whenever I try to sit down and prep a full scenario, I tend to get writer's block within a few minutes at best. The system I use to remedy that is more or less the following: Brainstorm. Write down a bunch of random ideas as they come to mind, silly or not. If nothing is coming up, try opening...

Starting a new campaign, with new players

In a couple weeks, I'm going to be starting up a new campaign, with a number of players more or less new to the game. While a new campaign is nothing new to me personally, a few circumstances change things up a bit: I'll be running it at a weekly club at my university, so other campaigns will...

    When it gets expensive!

While I own a few different RPGs, I try to only buy the core book(s) that I'll need to play/run the game. So, for Pathfinder as an example, that means just the Core Rulebook and the Bestiary, no exceptions. (Pathfinder books are expensive!). Savage Worlds? I just own the $10 core book. The only...

    Virtual Tabletop software?

I use MapTool. I'm completely happy with it, so I see no need in paying for other software. At GenCon, I actually asked almost every VTT booth "why pay for your program when MapTool is free?" and didn't get a good answer from any of them, surprisingly. Some were better than others at handling...

    D&D Starter sets

I disagree, considering it came out 3 years after the RC was published, making the Mentzer books even further away from it.

    D&D Starter sets

Consider how much of a page count it takes to have decent character creation options in 4e, and you can't really blame them.

    Who Has Tried Infrno.Net?

While I haven't tried Inferno, I did get distracted by attractive women giving out free gum balls at their GenCon booth, causing me to completely lose track of my friend that I was following. *facepalm* But, hey, the marketing clearly worked! I plan on checking it out, though as with...
