D&D 5E Rolled character stats higher than point buy?

But.... how do we reconcile between player satisfaction and a herd of clones/mutually exclusive stats then? I mean, for a long mileage group that plays for decades and is good at role playing, the PCs could probably even be made by hand, say..... generate the sets by what that character needs...

D&D 5E what is it about 2nd ed that we miss?

A fairly good diversion of the OP and one that made me think a bit more on the subject. Firstly, at our tables we have always hand waved HPs, and probably always will. It's just more convenient that way and saves us a lot of time. But, from a purely game play theoretical view, regardless of...

    hit dice and hit points

I think i actually like the HP "soft cap" of 1E and 2E. With basically infinite HP progression, late game tends to lag.

D&D 5E Rolled character stats higher than point buy?

After a day or so of further thinking, i came out with another reason i don't like point buy (or lowering some stats to have higher scores in other)..... ever since PB came around (probably around 3E for me), i have never played a character with more then 14 constitution....... at all...

D&D 5E Should each class get its own version of expertise?

As i mentioned in a previous thread about attack bonuses, it is my general feeling that training should matter more then raw talent, both in skill checks and attack checks (damage checks can be a different discussion). As such i would either favor a flatter bonus from ability scores when...

D&D 5E Rolled character stats higher than point buy?

This is what i'd do if/when DM-ing. Or a variant of it. I'd let each player roll 2-3 character ability arrays using 4d6 drop lowest and then allow the player to pick which one would be used. Not sure if i'd allow for the same array being used more then once or twice though. For me it is the...

    D&D 5E Best Armor in D&D

Chain shirt, until mithral chain mail becomes available (if). Mithral chain mail can be mostly worn under the regular clothing, is light enough to allow for dexterity checks without penalty, and chain just looks cool, especially when mixed with other types of clothing (which mithral totally...

    hit dice and hit points

Yeah, i read about the last part in the 2E handbook, i guess it's imported from 1E.

D&D 5E what is it about 2nd ed that we miss?

Yep. Aside from plot armor and light injury/stamina, i can't see how HP would work and make sense as a system.

    hit dice and hit points

Yep, my bad! I wrote the rogues because they got more hit dice overall, but forgot they still got one per level :) Thanks mate! That is what i was looking for.

    hit dice and hit points

Hey ya all! Just a quicky one. Back in the day, some classes featured more hit dice then the others (like rogues and rangers in example). In the case of the rangers, they even started with 2 hit dice at first level. Did the constitution bonus apply to all the hit dice when calculating hit...

D&D 5E Why Has D&D, and 5e in Particular, Gone Down the Road of Ubiquitous Magic?

Not just justified, there are few greater sins!

Was Gandalf Just A 5th Level Magic User?

Personally my opinion on the movies is mixed (depending on which movie we are talking about), with the extended editions IMO providing better "Tolkien Experience". However, if asked how to put Tom Bombadil into any adaptation i would be hard pressed to make a call. Except for the Barrow Downs...

Was Gandalf Just A 5th Level Magic User?

At least partially myself, yes. In example until last night i was almost sure that the wizards (namely Gandalf) could summon the Eagles ... somehow...... Only after re reading the chapters (before quoting) did it all get back to me. I find it funny how i remember Silmarillion, Children of Hurin...

D&D 5E what is it about 2nd ed that we miss?

Now all i need is bunch of foolhardy adventurers to follow me on a 2E based quest for glory :D Like the Complete Ranger? Now i'll need to scour the internet for this conversion!

Was Gandalf Just A 5th Level Magic User?

Well two proposed interpretations are: 1. and 2. And both have merit. Here is why: "How far can you bear me? " I said to Gwaihir. "Many leagues," said he, "but not to the ends of the earth. I was sent to bear tidings not burdens." Which contributes to he theory that the eagles were either...

D&D 5E what is it about 2nd ed that we miss?

Now that is one house rule i would love to live by..... EDIT: did any of you 2E veterans, managed to pull off a 1E ranger in 2E? And how?

Was Gandalf Just A 5th Level Magic User?

Again, by canon, the plan was not chose because it was deemed the wisest, only because it seamed so far fetched to work, that the Enemy would be slow to respond and even slower to figure out what was going on. It was blind luck (or divine providence) that it worked out so well, the Enemy figured...

Was Gandalf Just A 5th Level Magic User?

It was a long weekend and i missed out a lot. Training on Friday and Sunday, 8 mile run on Saturday, followed by a Saturday night DnD session (anyone remember those, it's why we are here ;) ); and only now on a lunch break do i get to write a bit. This is not meant as personal response to...
