    New Character Builder from WotC!

Your DM uses all the options. I assume by this you mean that your DM allows the players to use all the options. As far as I can tell (though I am far from an expert) most of the best builds are still a part of the original CB. Any non-essentials and non-Dark Sun build are still an option for...

Wizards: Musings on the new DDi disaster

Could we all agree that the debate over IP in this context is largely moot since no one, least of all WOTC, wants your character? I have no idea whether or not the picture you draw on a urinal wall with your own feces has some sort of implied copyright. But I can say for certain that, at at...

Wizards: Musings on the new DDi disaster

Hasbro is publically traded. There must be someone on this board who is a broker, an attorney or somehow how ready access to a database with the financial information to settle this debate.

    New Character Builder from WotC!

Pretty much my sentiment. I use the Compendium as much as the CB since I DM so I will keep my subscription so I don't have to buy the books. But in its current form the CB is not useful for me. At a minimum I need to add a bonus feat and I would really like to see the math. I made some...

So, how many are avoiding Essentials?

Just played a game with a Battlemind, Monk, Druid, Bard, and Essentials Thief. No one really noticed. No one really cared. It did not change the game in any way. A dramatic and fancy double-weapon would have made a bigger splash. The Essentials is 4.5, a new game, totally awesome, totally...

    New Character Builder from WotC!

I hear you. I know the 20 character limitation is going to be a pain in my ass for sure. There is plenty of room for serious complaints. I barely ever post. But the volume of gripe quotes has compelled me to interject because so many people seem to be so clearly grumpy over the fact that they...

    New Character Builder from WotC!

Shidaku, I sympathize with your feelings. I have played D&D for many years. I have an emotional and personal investment in the game that transcends every other hobby I have. Yet I spend more on baking, Xbox games, alcohol, tobacco and film (Netflix, Redbox and cable) than I do D&D. I appreciate...

    New Character Builder from WotC!

It is very unlikely that WOTC has character limit to save storage space so I think the minutia about gmail etc. is mostly irrelevant. Best case for WOTC is that every player who uses DDI is paying for an account. This is not likely to happen. Best case for people who expect to get whatever...

What would be a good one-shot adventure?

For a one-shot my group really liked the "Worse Than Death" adventure in Dungeon by Robert Schwalb. It is good if you want a mix of role playing, fairly fluid skill challenges and fights with a bit of creepiness. If you want straight sequential combat it might be best to pass on it. If you are...

I seem to be missing the point on the online CB

I honestly sympathize because what you experienced was a product that could be updated or not at your pleasure and had utility regardless of whether or not you were subscriber. Unlike a video game, however, I would argue that this is not what you actually bought, regardless of how you...

I seem to be missing the point on the online CB

I don't want to question anyone's intentions but I have to think that if a person is of the mind that they purchased a piece of stand-alone, perpetually funtional, software they are engaged in some self deception. It is just an old-timey way of doing business. The CB is something analogous to...

I seem to be missing the point on the online CB

I never claimed to be particularly bright or competent. Given my limited facilities, managing the characters for alternating campaigns and one-offs is hard. Not as hard as keeping score in bowling or arithmetic, but harder than I like. I would prefer if everyone could just log in and access...

I seem to be missing the point on the online CB

That is what we do. Its a minor hassle and if someone forgets to email it, or more likely wants to make the character with group input, they just recreate it on my computer before we play. And then I have to remember if the authoritative version is on my desktop, my laptop, as attachment in my...

I seem to be missing the point on the online CB

Say's you. We play with paper character sheets. Too many gadgets are distracting, at least in our game. At most we keep my netbook around to use the Compendium (mostly because, thanks to the DDi, I have not had to buy all the books I use.) Tranfering characters from my desktop to my laptop...

An idea for DMG 3 (make it happen, WotC!)

I would hate to see this in a source book but this is exactly the sort of thing that should be covered extensively in the Dragon and Dungeon online magazines. The current material is, I think, just a bit thin these days.

Attacking vehicles - awesome or silly?

I don't think that vehicles can be grabbed. AV pg.15 says "Any conditions from the Player’s Handbook excluded from this section have no effect on vehicles." Immobilized, prone, restrained, slowed. No grab. I don't think you can grab vehicles. They are "considered objects." The target of grab...

Essentials: Magic Item Rarity Explained, it's actually good!

This would then be a skill challenge and the additional money you make would be the treasure parcel you expect to receive for successfully completing an encounter. The 20% assumes you are dumping the item for quick cash to the most convenient person with little or no haggling. Anything more is...

When is a power used? (Crescendo Sword)

I have been lurking at Enworld for over 6 years. I rarely felt the need to post because despite the complexity of 3e rules I learned a lot more by just reading. Maybe the 4e rules are just too obvious for the interesting and insightful people who used to post to keep posting. Anyway, I think I...

    Shuriken question(s)

Youa are right. But a dagger does have the off hand property. You hold the shuriken in your main hand and the dagger in your off hand. As far as I know (PHB 215) there is no penalty for using the off-hand dagger whenever you want to for a power.

Ongoing damage and saves in a surprise round?

The only specific text I see is what I quoted above. It says surprised creatures do get an action. If I am missing something please quote the relevant text. Otherwise I don't think the answer is quite as obvious as you are insisting it is. Not that I even disagree with you.
