So ludonarrative dissonance is when the story of a game is describing something to you the player that the narrative the gameplay would imply is contradictory to without the game's narrative presenting an explanation for this. I may not be using the traditional use of this term but i am trying...

D&D 5E ludonarrative dissonance of hitpoints in D&D

a few people have actually brought things up about my first post on this thread, but most people havnt and ive pointed out multiple times that arguing over what subordinate concepts that different types of damage relate to or not and whether hitpoints can be quantified is not really about the...

no i kinda think theosis is closer to what i was describing with growing in likeness or unity with your patron deity. the other term for theosis is deification though not with the idea that you become a separate deity from your patron deity but become that deity.

so its more of a guideline than a rule (thought if we start bringing up how the book basicly claims everything about it are guidelines rather than rules we wont be able to argue about anything) im aware the game makes concessions of compromise between reality and gameplay. back in the day...

well, i think it might be best explained that at dinner time i dont like my peas and mash touching ive also been arguing a lot on the word of the rules here and you've really brought up more of a homebrew point with combining them. if we dont combine them i just wonder what the point of having...

D&D General Clerics and Divine Ascension

so really the idea i have for this is not a question of making sense, in many ways based on particularities of the given relationship between god and servant (this would often not work between particularly individualistic deities) then this may not occur, but i did state this as an option rather...

How does the model argue that its certainly true that these doors and npc's are differentiated? Is the 10% of doors or 10% of npcs where the result is different ment to represent determinant differentilization or is it meant to represent temporary differentalization? Is the module there to...

D&D 5E ludonarrative dissonance of hitpoints in D&D

ah sorry right, forgot about that. so the game does actually specify the quantities of each ingredient in hitpoints very vaguely. which is interesting as that was a contention earlier. so essentially above half hitpoints is all mental durability, will to live, and luck (whether it makes sense or...

i think you miss the point of my statement when you only cut part of it out to respond to and ignore the rest

if you were feared and lost hitpoints and didn't get the fear condition it would be less "real" feeling. i agree. im not arguing against that, what im arguing against is not doing that. i dont think its necessary to use fear as a way of dealing damage, but if people want to that's fine i just...

D&D 5E ludonarrative dissonance of hitpoints in D&D

like i said i tend not to disagree with players having total narrative control over what hitpoints and damage means for their character. i was never really arguing against that perspective. the only case where the rules explicitly state that one thing happens is that injury poison must be...

i've got no problem with player interpritation, that does prevent the dm from interpreting it for the player in a way they might disagree with. but mostly my initial statement here was about a narrative i ran into when i first made a homebrew post here telling me i was wrong about how i designed...

so this is going to be a short one, im mostly just sharing an idea that crossed my mind and people are probably going to mostly be like "thats cool" or "thats not for me", and "heres what the books say", or "heres what i do", or "why would you even play a game at this level" i dont know what...

D&D 5E ludonarrative dissonance of hitpoints in D&D

its kinda funny to imagine how mental duribility, will to live, and luck play a role in a character falling below 0 hitpoints and dying. "so how did you die?" "well a dragon blasted me with hot flames" "oh man thats brutal, terrible look to find your body in" "oh my body was fine besides all...

if your fated to die by fire, and take double damage from it, what does the damage best represent in that case? sure fate plays a hand in how much fire damage you take, but what effect does it actually have on the concept of you as a character, do you lose fatepoints or do you lose lifepoints...

or you know instead of trying to fit a narrative to our preconceived notions of how the mechanics work we instead go with the most logical subordinate concept of hitpoints for how fire damage reduces hitpoints instead of stepping on the toes of another mechanic Condition Summary :: 5e.d20srd.org

D&D 5E ludonarrative dissonance of hitpoints in D&D

All but one ingredient need not be removed for the majority of damage in the game to be represented by one of the ingredients while others are then used when most necessary. The argument that was often used to address the point i brought up about injury poison only being able to be delivered if...
