The Ogre Killed the Dwarf in 3 Rounds

You say this like its a bad thing. What the hell were the clerics doing during these 5 rounds?

We Don't All Have Color Printers, Dangit

There are lots of awesome KotB maps and images available free on the net. Google image search is your friend! For example, here is an awesome player map that was quite useful in my playtest game yesterday: http://wiki.rpg.net/index.php/File:TheCavesofChoasExterior.gif I also recommend...

    The Playtest Agreement

I don't disagree with any of that. I simply think its a mistake to cancel or otherwise abort an otherwise viable playtest group this weekend, simply because 100% by-the-book official sign-ups aren't practical. If just one person at the table has signed-up, then that game is a win for everyone...

    The Playtest Agreement

I agree that the OPTA is very much on par with EULA silliness. I'm as worried about it as any EULA as well. It's a speed bump which doesn't change much. The real value of registering officially is participation in the formal testing surveys. It's in Wizards interests that groups playtest these...

    The Playtest Agreement

Guys, pull the corn cob out and relax for a minute. Doesn't that feel better? ;) Right, the Wizo Police are not going to knock on your door tomorrow looking for your papers. If I wasn't the soul of discretion that I am, I might even talk about how I've already rezipped the player docs...

D&D 5E Guidelines for D&D Next playtest/adventure discussion here at ENW

I believe WotC said something recently about putting together a dedicated playtest forum specifically for this purpose. I hope they'll have something to say about this Thursday.

    D&D 5E Does D&D Next need a Core Setting?

That has nothing directly to do with the Nentir Vale, and doesn't address the question of this thread. The fact is, 4th edition did include a new cosmology, which was pushed into every crevice they could find (for good or ill, depending on taste). That did happen. Blaming that on Nentir Vale is...

When did the Fighter become "defender"?

Really? Then why the heck why did you start this topic in the Next forum? Could it be that..? Why, yes! I'm sure you were.

When did the Fighter become "defender"?

Hey, I've got 2008 on the phone, and he says he's missing a thread. Have any of y'all seen a thread that belongs to 2008?

Public D&D Playtests To Begin On May 24th

It's not a beta test or a release candidate. We're not testing a feature complete draft after 2 years of development. This is not like the open PF beta. This is near the front side of the project cycle; after 6 months of development, we get to review a design demo. The real implementation won't...

D&D 5E Monte Cook Leaves WotC - No Longer working on D&D Next [updated]

This is not the lamest thread in the world, no.., this is just a tribute.

Seminar Transcript - Class Design: From Assassins to Wizards

There was a remark about DMs filtering on class frequency: Going along those lines we separated things along the lines of what's common or uncommon. So for example fighters, clerics, wizards and clerics might be commmon while warlocks, bards, and paladins fall into uncommon and something like...

Seminar Transcript - Class Design: From Assassins to Wizards

I just wanted to say, I totally called this yesterday... ;) Monte: To start with we kind of shot at the moon, and said everything that's been in a Player's Handbook 1, we want to potentially have in our new player's book. That includes things like the warlock and the warlord from 4th edition...

    D&D 5E A 5th Edition: And It's About Time

Regarding the to-hit slopes between various editions, y'all may be interested to read a couple of recent blog entries from Steve Winter: A Brief History of Attack Bonuses "To Hit" vs. Armor Class Cheers! UPDATE: Also, I meant to add, here is a paraphrased quote of Monte today regarding...

Seminar Transcript - Charting the Course: An Edition for all Editions

I think the main takeaway from that statement is, player characters won't be locked into just the options used at creation; they can be refactored later for taste. You could just as easily simplify the character after deciding the superfunoptioncandy you picked initially tastes way too sweet...

Seminar Transcript - Charting the Course: An Edition for all Editions

It's a really good question, and I don't play a game designer on TV (much less in RL), so I probably won't do a very good job of guessing what they're up to. So take this with the same giant grain of salt you're already using for all the other threads in this forum. ;) The GURPS comparison is...

Seminar Transcript - Charting the Course: An Edition for all Editions

What are the invariants, indeed! It's fun to chase each other in circles trying to guess what classes/races/doodads are going to be part of the "core rules", but I'm not sure those lines of thinking are as applicable as many assume. Everyone wants to make sure their favorite stuff ends up in...

Seminar Transcript - Charting the Course: An Edition for all Editions

D&D Next is a Stack In today's seminar, they talked about the core rules lexicon, and the idea that the optional modules would have seeds in the core. This part of the seminar isn't getting the bandwidth that splashier bits like the playtest snippets are getting, but let's have some fun with...
