    DDXP Begins Today!

A lot of folks have a pretty common-sense notion that a "basic core" means a stripped down 4X4 class/race game, and everything else (other classes/races) must be in segregated optional rules modules. Because we know so little about what they've cooked up so far, this model of the core does seem...

    DDXP Begins Today!

How hard is it to ignore a class you don't like? We've been doing that for years (decades!). :p Including "best of hits" from all editions means, that if there's an edition you don't like, you can count on Next having something you don't like in it. Everyone's supposed to get a bone, and pretty...

    DDXP Begins Today!

This is a playtest. A late-alpha playtest, at that. All this means is they wanted people to test playing a class:warlord in Caves of Chaos. I think it's very early days to be drawing lines around "core", or even understanding what available class choices mean in the core. B-)

Yes. You say that like it's a bad thing. ;)

D&D Playtet News for Week of January 16 Up!

In fact, all that activity occurred last week. There hasn't been any activity on the official DnD Next group blog since Monte's Mechanics Supporting Story post last Friday.

Legends and Lore 11/15/2011 - Out of Bounds

Take a look at the L&L column archive and you will see that all the columns since 9/27 are credited to Monte. I was also confused by a byline last month for Mike, but I believe this was likely a cut & paste error on the website, which they appear to have corrected.

WIR S1 Tomb of Horrors [SPOILERS!! SPOILERS EVERYWHERE!!]‏

Rawr! Whoever pissed in your cornflakes this morning, it wasn't me, honest. I have never run ToH, and I'm not making assertions about this adventure in general. I was simply offering another perspective regarding Gary's reflection on this room. Please try not to inflate my remarks out of...

WIR S1 Tomb of Horrors [SPOILERS!! SPOILERS EVERYWHERE!!]‏

In regards to Gary's comment, you need to constantly remind yourself of the tournament meta-game. Let's look at the quote again: As an experienced tourney DM, I can tell you that the "mission" of virtually every tournament adventure is to finish. Traditional scoring is weighted for progress and...

    FC's Complex Reputation Undeserved?

Heh, thanks for the informed disagreement guys, that actually helps me organize my own thoughts about FC. ;) I haven't run or played FC, but some of the abstractions like Reputation was what drew my interest. That, and the Crafty design chops. I'm unlikely to get my buddies that far off the...

Dallas, TX: Game Chest gone from Valley View Mall

View View has been facing a possible wrecking ball or total do-over since it was last sold a couple of years ago. Here is a current news item regarding the mall; reading this I had to wonder if Game Chest was still alive in there. So I guess this answers that. It's too bad. The last time I...

Mearls: Playing with the core (of D&D)

Yes. Investigation carries a connotation of plot (specificity), whereas exploration implies more of a sandbox (generality). I'm not talking about what the words actually mean, mind you, just the baggage they carry.

Mearls: Playing with the core (of D&D)

Y'all realize that the primary, foremost purpose of this column is to generate page hits for the website, right? If it seems kinda stream of consciousness, that's probably because it IS. While I wouldn't accuse WotC of concern-trolling 5E for page hits (too subtle for the corporate tin ear)...

    Published persistent mega-dungeons

Dragon's Delve [dungeonaday.com] just started releasing encounters for Level 16... .., a bottle city no less.

    XP Through the Editions

I've given some thought to awarding XP on a combination of treasure, and objective-based achievements. Like early versions of D&D, you'd get minimal XP from just fighting. You'd avoid unnecessary fights and put more effort into exploration. However, there would be still be monsters that carry...

    Kitbashing the Sandbox

Unfortunately, this appears to be totally out of print and unavailable in PDF. It looks like nobleknight.com has some copies of the 2000 printing, but there was a revised version released in 2006 that I can't find anywhere... :(

    Kitbashing the Sandbox

I've admired Larin Karr for a long time, but haven't read Barakus in detail. The bread-n-butter Necromancer mods like these are ideal candidates, and I'll have to look at several of them that I've previously missed. The Dungeon Delve book looks like a good resource to cherry pick from. Some...

    Kitbashing the Sandbox

Thanks! I haven't looked at Chaos Scar since the first module was released. I understand there's a whole mess of them now. Any recommendations from those familiar with them are welcome. Should one cherry pick a few highlights or try to recycle the lot? The whole meteor thing seemed a bit cheesy...

    Kitbashing the Sandbox

Executive summary: please recommend adventure mods for a prefab, setting-light sandbox campaign. Thanks heaps! Yes, a sandbox thread. My bad. :heh: However, I’d like to suggest a thread topic focused more on methods than definitions. Broad and shallow; less QQ, more pew pew. ;) I’m going to...
