D&D 5E "when circumstances are appropriate for hiding"

Anyway after all this, I did some searches; sure I read, and listened to all this before, but: https://twitter.com/JeremyECrawford/status/834885800626008064 http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/james-haeck-dd-writing Long story short - the DM is always right, so we are both right...

D&D 5E "when circumstances are appropriate for hiding"

Isnt that circular though, since you only think they have that level of "combat awareness" because you think the hiding box that lays this stuff out is saying the creatures you hid from are engaged in melee or whatever. But that is the issue we are discussing. The text from PHB, page 177: "In...

D&D 5E "when circumstances are appropriate for hiding"

Well they dont have a lot of health and they get no extra attacks, they are based on sneak dmg, which is triggered by advantage and get a way to trigger that without losing their action at a low level. It seems to me how the class was designed. But not "almost every single combat", but I think...

D&D 5E "when circumstances are appropriate for hiding"

I agree the default party size is 4 pcs after all. But the 4 pcs might be engaged with different creatures, I think the question of if the creature being hidden from is being distracted by default by another pc or not is quite important and also quite fuzzy - it needs to be said. Hence according...

D&D 5E "when circumstances are appropriate for hiding"

But Hide is an Action option for people in Combat - under chapter 8 of the PHB - Combat. Also it is an easy way to get advantage for rogues, who also can quite early on do it as a bonus action.

D&D 5E "when circumstances are appropriate for hiding"

Elfcrusher, I fully appreciate the "cheesyness" of "Attack-Hide-Attack-Hide-Attack-Hide" from rogues - pesky rogues... but nerfing their class over it seems a bit harsh. Also I get some people only want a roleplay rich game, and I think they are cool. Everyone is the master of their own games...

D&D 5E "when circumstances are appropriate for hiding"

You are adding that the enemies are engaging some other foe, that is not in the rules or assumed there as far as I can tell. The hider and the creature(s) are all that are specified in that text. Why do think that is implied? EDIT : Maybe you mistook something ? I was quoting part of the...

D&D 5E "when circumstances are appropriate for hiding"

I didnt mean to imply that they shouldnt get it most every turn they have (combat), I think they should. Youd have to do the math and see how it works out, it seems to me that most often they want it to be a viable class though.

D&D 5E "when circumstances are appropriate for hiding"

five feet ally ? optional flanking rules? Help action? Anyway yeah, sneak is triggered not by being unseen, but its side effect; advantage. There are many ways to get advantage and if the rogue is not relying on hiding so much because they are getting it from something else, then the rogue...

D&D 5E "when circumstances are appropriate for hiding"

I like the rules as written, and didnt mean to imply anything else. What I said was about the tedium of having the rogue run around behind walls in EVERY encounter, when it is often appropriate for them to not have to do that. The rules state : "[...] so if you come out of hiding and approach...

D&D 5E "when circumstances are appropriate for hiding"

Well the idea is that fighters/barbs are swinging axes and stuff in the faces of enemies, the rogue hides... The assumption everyone seems to be making is that the enemies are aware of the rogues actions whilst getting smackered by the barbs/etc... I do not think that is a valid assumption...

D&D 5E "when circumstances are appropriate for hiding"

Hmm, so here is how I see it :- 1. DM: "what do you do?" 2. PC: "I move behind this pillar and use my action to HIDE" A) [The PC has specified an action (maybe bonus action if rogue), the DM at this point needs to tell the player PC, if that thing he thinks he can hide behind is suitable, if...

D&D 5E "when circumstances are appropriate for hiding"

Saelorn the ridiculous situation is covered in the PHB, the char could and should be able to attempt hide, but since the enemies are not stupid they would not get unseen attackers in that situation. Also it seems to me as the OP said - the DM decides only because they know where the broken...

D&D 5E "when circumstances are appropriate for hiding"

The hiding mechanic has me feeling uneasy when I watch some games on youtube and how some DMs rule it. Since classes like the rogue use this as part of their fighting style, if a DM is "too strict" with hiding, then the DM has effectively nerfed that class. If I am playing 5e rules, I want to...

D&D 5E Player Workbench Beta Feedback.

Both fonts are horrifically bad and you shouldnt use either. They look bad and amaterish, but worse they are non-functional for the intended purpose. Most people might just get annoyed with them through usage, but many people actually will recognise the issue the straight away - it is what...

D&D 5E Building an Adventure (Flavor text)

My own take is that if someone has bothered to download/buy some adventure module, you should provide them with the box text as is the standard. As soon as you start to go the route of "leaving to the imagination" you are failing to provide the material that is expected. Why not just not write...

An endless stream of random encounters

Random encounters will destroy a game faster and more seriously than pretty much anything else, it is best to rethink how you think about them. They are not isolated random encounters. In an adventure the random encounters are part of the world, they might be paid troops doing guard routes, or...

    Fast teaching/demo adventure ideas

What I did when I had a bunch of new players, and wanted a quick intro adventure is copy this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Dragon_Gate_Inn Watch the film and copy it, the players enter the Inn just after the rebels with the kids do. Everyone is trapped in the Inn for a few days, due to...

D&D 5E Firearms help needed please

Perfect fix, thanks. Actually I realigned all the damage last night, it hit me that this is the way to go. Everything remains balanced, and guns are preferable to archaic weapons. EDIT: 5e is kinda cinematic by default, we want to keep this, or choose the gritty realism DMG rules if we want...

    D&D 5E 9 words to help run a sandbox

These are excellent points, but in a real sandbox the players can do "the adventure" they want. So no matter how many clever ways there are of hooking your players into a dungeon death trap maze with that vampire conspiracy nut at the end, your players might just enquire about murder mysteries...
