    Class Balance - why?

It's certainly correct that "true" balance can never be achieved through the mechanical aspects of the game alone, but so what? Even if the balance is not perfect it can still be good. Saying that class balance can't be achieved is like saying that world peace can't be achieved - probably true...

    Making Magic Magical Again?

Which would invalidate pretty much all their powers and class features. This, incidentally, also immediately reaches the conclusion you'd like to see it seems: In this scenario the fighter is tougher, while the wizard has more effective powers. Your math regarding the wizard's relative...

    Making Magic Magical Again?

I can't say I agree. The Fighter has better protection overall (in the form of defenses and hp) but he's a melee defender. He makes himself vulnerable to both ranged and melee attacks from the enemies. He can't teleport, fly, summon monsters, or otherwise shift the face of the battlefield. All...

    Making Magic Magical Again?

Magic has never been "magical", in the sense that it evokes a sense of wonder. (It's always been magical in the sense that it's supernatural, of course.) To use an example again brought up earlier, the ring of regeneration. It makes your wounds heal quicker. Ok, that's supernatural. Is it...

So, Dark Sun: It's officially out. What do you think of it?

Aarakocra are in the creature catalogue. They have a fly speed, and are thus very unsuitable for PC material.

PHB3: Random stuff that doesn't merit a full post

The Staff of Aversion states: "You gain a +2 bonus to all defenses against attacks from enemies that are subject to effects caused by you." It doesn't specify conditions as such.

    So how is 4th edition?

And me too. Well... not exactly. I once helped out my DM who needed to prepare a hostile group of NPCs, basically the 'anti-party'. One of the spellcasters took him, even with my help, over two hours to construct. Later that night I killed that NPC with the very first action of the combat. Or...

    Monster Manual 2 Survey

I think the amount of fluff is just right in MM2. There's some interesting hints and details, and that's all I want. I think the AD&D2e manuals were dreadful, with entire pages wasted to detail yet another 1-HD demihuman. If I wanted to read about a campaign setting, I'd buy a campaign setting.

My current one: Floating islands and sky ships. My now defunct one: PHB-continent discovers and colonizes MM-continent.

Dragon 382 - Winning Races: Dusk Elf

Ok yes, that's true. But I still don't see how that makes dusk elves able to "shadowmeld at night" like WoW night elves do, which is what ProfessorCirno said.

No they don't. No they don't.

Dragon 382 - Winning Races: Dusk Elf

Eh, how exactly are Dusk Elves supposed to shadowmeld at night?

    PHB3 Debut: Ardent Speculation

D&D is rife with such naming conventions. Barbarian is not a kind of class, it's a slur against a society you deem to be less civilized than your own. Assassin is a dumb name, because as soon as you hire some fighters and a wizard to rid the town of ogre raiders, they become de facto assassins...

    Dragon Controller article up

Hmm... now I want to see a Legion's Hold with Explosive Power. You don't have to use the full distance, or even any, with forced movement effects, so you can make for some very effective rewriting of the battlefield. Soldiers stunned in the back, controllers stunned right next to us. Perfect. ;)

    Slow (the condition) seems weak

Some creatures have "shift 6 squares" as (part of) a power. Some creatures have "shift up to your speed" as (part of) a power. The difference is exactly where Slow comes into play. And no, it's not a very strong condition. Which is why several at-wills have slow, as opposed to stun, daze...

    The Essentials articles are atrocious.

Yeah, I just read that sidebar at the end and thought: "well, somebody's been reading the forums haven't they?" But I agree. The Essentials aren't there to provide the absolute top damage capability.

Monster Damage: What am I missing?

Re: Bahamut He's much more deadly than you're making him out to be. * The aftereffect of the ongoing 15 from his disintegration breath is ongoing 10. * He can damage and grab anybody who moves adjacent to him, and then his bite automatically hits any time they fail an escape attempt. * He can...

Divine Challenge: Switching targets means you don't have to engage?

Actually, my problem came from the word "challenged." Because it's past tense, while the rest of the sentence is not, I took that to mean challenged in previous rounds only. So on round one you challenge an orc. Good. On round two maintaining the challenge starts becoming an issue, and you must...

Divine Challenge: Switching targets means you don't have to engage?

Upon a second, third, fourth, and fifth reading of the rules I come to the conclusion that my interpretation of the power was based on a present tense/past tense reading that's still possible, but ultimately not the most likely. So I concede I was wrong and now share the opinions of FireLance...
