Can you choose to reduce the area of an AE power?

I don't think you can choose to lower the area of a spell, but you can position part of it in a wall or other blocking terrain. That way you could hit people standing in a line against a wall and not your allies who are attacking them from one square away.

Yes, it's in the Forgotten Realms Player's Guide.

D&D 4E What levels have you played at in 4E?

I've DM'd for a group of my friends that just turned level 8 Saturday night. As for playing, I've gone through KotS and ended with a level 4 Wizard and in another campaign I'm still a level 1 Ranger.

Rain of steel - too powerful?

I believe the way the powers are written invalidates the theory that enhancement and other bonuses aren't added to a damage roll. Listing a damaging ability as [W]+Strength modifier is somewhat redundant if [W] is all inclusive of strength and such. In fact, written like that, you would add...

Rain of steel - too powerful?

The dwarven fighter in my game uses it to pretty much the same effect described here. Honestly, I don't have a problem with it because it essentially makes him a vulnerable version of the 1st level Wizard daily Flaming Sphere. Flaming Sphere does around 1d4+8 (~10.5) and Rain of Steel does...

Not allowed to talk about current HP and dying

Moreover, how does a character themself know that they are running out of skill, luck or resolve? I can see that they would know when they are demoralized, but an abstract quality like luck? They know exactly how much "luck" they have remaining because the game calls for it. I tell my...

Not allowed to talk about current HP and dying

The guiding philosophy I use in this situation is that players should have plenty of information to enable them to make an intelligent move. Part of a leader's job is to keep the party alive to the best of their ability, and making them overheal or use a less effective heal than is needed is...

Greedy Players and the Lust for Treasure!

For loot in my games, I let my players keep track of their own wish lists and when an encounter has treasure, I say that it is "amorphous mercurial steel" of level X. In essence, it is an Xth level item, but I'll let them decide what it is because of who will get it. The main drawback is that...

New D&D Facebook Game Live Today!

Is the game down? I keep trying to access it and just end up with a blank background with the facebook toolbars/ads around it.

New D&D Facebook Game Live Today!

Second the random number generator thing. I had no successful encounters in Cutthroats of Crawling Bog and my ranger died after the 3rd one because I couldn't roll over a 12.

    Preview: Brutal Ability

I have a somewhat related question to this thread, so I thought I'd ask here. Does the Dwarven Weapon Training feat qualify you to use an Executioner's Axe, as it says you gain training in all axes and hammers?

Dragon PC's, or can solo or elite monster PC's be balanced

Healing surges are probably something you'll have to think about a lot. A red dragon's healing surge would be like 180 hp, still pacing it to be over 5x a level 15 character's healing surge value. With 2 per day, that means that the dragons would have around 10 healing surges expressed in PC...

Dragon PC's, or can solo or elite monster PC's be balanced

The first thing I think you have to consider is whether the dragons will gain experience along with the two PCs. If so, because they are more powerful than player characters, there becomes an issue of whether or not they receive the same amount of xp a character does at the end of an encounter...

    Summoning + xp

The Skull Lord animates them at full hit points with no detrimental effects, even allowing them to stand as a free action and take actions normally on their next turn. I don't see anywhere where they are less powerful than normal.

    Summoning + xp

In a related issue, what about the Skull Lord who can reanimate allies? Does the party gain additional xp for the creatures they have already slain but are raised to fight again?

New eladrin fighter powers: light blades required. Eh?

Yes, I'm aware that those items don't have enhancement bonuses. I see that you get the shield conundrum, and I would say I agree with you on what the paragon/epic tier versions should look like.

New eladrin fighter powers: light blades required. Eh?

Is it just me or are the magic items in that supplement identified by level but have no corresponding enhancement bonus listed? I can infer a lot of them, but the shield perplexes me.

D&D 4E Any tips for speeding up the game? 4e is slowing me down!

I've noticed that combat was going a bit slow for other players in a game I'm playing in, so I shared my method of speeding up my turn with them and it's speeded up greatly. This may be similar to power cards, but I haven't heard of them until this thread. I write down all my abilities sorted...

    Rain of Steel too powerful

Actually, Thicket of Blades is much better than Rain of Steel. If you are surrounded by 8 enemies and use Thicket of Blades to attack each of them and hit only 7 of 8 of the targets, the ability is not consumed because of the Reliable keyword. So that's a pretty renewable 3[W] ability given...
