    Boardless combat rules

I'm personally fine with the assumption of a grid because we generally use one, but I do wish that WotC, in the DMG, would have included a few pages on suggestions on running combats without one, that includes language about the most 'grid-dependent' abilities and conditions (sneak attacks...

Monte's 3.75? (A sequal is on its way)

er, did you even read the post? It specifically self-identified as "coming from a Monte fan." I haven't read BoXM yet myself, and am not weighing in on it, but if you're going to attack someone's opinions, you should at least read their post...

    D&D 4E 4E is like WoW (NOT!)

If by, "plays like Diablo" you mean 'plays nothing like Diablo,' absolutely correct. Diablo* was a repetitive finger-mashing game, in which you did the same boring attack over and over, kinda like older versions of D&D... This was especially true for martial types of course, but was not...

D&D 4E POL Settings in Literature to Base 4e Settings On

Just because it hasn't been listed, D&D's own Dark Sun setting virtually epitomizes PoL. Which gets me thinking, that a setting in which all governmental structure is by necessity local (via City States, barricaded towns, etc.,) is PoL, assuming that the reasons for local governance have...

D&D 4E Keith Baker on 4E! (The Hellcow responds!)

Much thanks for spending all the time with us, Keith. Am quite tantalized by the hints about the multiclassing system, especially. Its something I hope we can hear more about soon.. :)

new death save == leave your buddy on the floor for 3 rounds?

It seems unlikely that any monster or enemy that actually wants to *win* the fight would waste their action by attacking someone who was already unconscious, when there were still standing and dangerous PCs about. They may however conveniently fit the fallen PC into their Area of Effect powers...

D&D 4E Keith Baker on 4E! (The Hellcow responds!)

Another reason I prefer the new paradigm is that it will take up less whitespace. Less dedicated to statblocks equals more delicious flavoring, perhaps some more tasty crunch per page than what we have now (not only the MM pages, but those brutally long example characters that appear after PrCs...

D&D 4E What was Paizo thinking? 3.75 the 4E clone?

I'm guessing this is part of the reason that Paizo are working with Necromancer on their 4e adventure path. They can hedge their bets by dipping into the 4e pool without fully committing. After comparing the sales numbers of the 4e path with the 3.789837 path, they will be able to better...

does rolling a 20 on a saving throw get rid of all effects on you?

There is another thread on this somewhere. Consensus seems to be that rule is only present in the minis game (though I personally like it).

    D&D 4E 4E at the Printers!

Sweet! Congrats to the development, editing, typsetting, art and all other associated teams and entities that got this project off the ground and saw it through to completion! (Would it be too snarky to add my voice to the 'where is the GSL?' chorus?)

    D&D 4E 4e - Is it really D&D Yet?

Unfortunately, all the responders have made themselves targets for the perpetually oppressed who will happily nitpick every sentence in their posts to prove they are wrong. While I am decided about 4e, many of the people here will straight up attack them for even hinting that criticism of 4e is...

A dragon can outwit a party of adventurers. Can you?

Use environment for creature tactics? Its usually the PCs busting into the monster's dens, right? Monsters should be using traps if they can build them.. Dragons should have lairs that make their flight ability an advantage, etc. If you set up the combat on a flat battlemat without any...

The more things to save against, the better?

Ah, minis rule only. Edited. Too bad, I kinda liked this rule. :)

D&D 4E 4ed Pace of advancement... do we know anything ?

Count me in the camp that likes the elimination of elements (xp drain, xp costs for crafting) that prevent me from arbitrary advancement. We usually game 2-3x per month, and if the party levels every other session, than a 1-30 campaign (assuming one goes that long) would take us just about two...

    1.5 instead of 1-2-1?

My thought was, that for people who want to retain a little more versimilitude, while also taking advantage of 4e's faster play mechanic, that they could do something like this: Diagonal movement: First square as normal, cost after that = diagonal squares moved +1. (In effect, it would go...

    D&D 4E DDXP 4E Rules Appendix

Oh wow, Yay...! Awesome change. Players will actually have to use resource management now for their 'big guns', but will be much freer with the smaller ones.

D&D 4E My 4e House Rules that have nothing to do with 1-2-1 movement

We'll probably try to play it right out of the box for at least the first several sessions. The diagonal movement thing would bother me more if the 1-2-1-2 movement was itself more mathematically accurate. Since it really isn't (the first step is not enough, the second one is too much), I'm...

Trip is an Encounter Power now

Thank you Gawds. The Improved Trip rinse-repeat strategy was something I really disliked about 3.x, especially for those with reach weapons.
