    D&D 5E Giving 5th Edition a look but...

Uh, before this thread implodes: The fighter doesn't have spells in 4E. They have feats (you know, as in the actual dictionary definition of the word) of martial skill, endurance and strength. Those are trained maneuvers, tricks and combat techniques. Not spells. Now in 5E you have at least two...

D&D 5E Random Starter Set Teaser from Google+

I believe weapons are missing because this is the starter set and you only need weapon stats for pregens and monsters and it saves space. The PHB/Basic will have the rest. And I think we need some mental image shifting. There was never something like the longsword historically. So merging them...

    D&D 5E [Merged] D&D Next/5E Release Schedule Threads

Well, if you order through Amazon it's actually 40$ per book or 120$ for the bunch. And I suspect that might be part of the reason behind the staggered release. Paying 120-150$ at once for a game is a lot. 40$ each couple of months is easier to stomach and easier to fit into a monthly budget.

    D&D 5E [Merged] D&D Next/5E Release Schedule Threads

My purchase of the Starter Set depends entirely on whether it will have character creation rules or not. The PHB is a sure buy, unless early reviews convince me otherwise.

    D&D 5E Big 5e Announcement Today?

Technically there's still time tomorrow. :p Or maybe they will release something concurently with the GenCon schedule.

How often have you gamed in the past year?

We have two regular weekly sessions. Sometimes one or both get cancelled, but that's rare. For a few months we had three sessions weekly, but that has proven to be too much. Plus some conventions with 1-4 sessions in addition to the regular games. So definitely more than once per week on...

D&D 5E Character Concepts you cannot make in 5E

Specify what you mean by "Defender Wizard", considering the role of "defender" doesn't actually exist outside the design scope of 4E. As for the fighter, yes, you can absolutely make that character. Put your highest stats in Dex, Str and Charisma. Wear light armour. Wield a heavy weapon. Choose...

D&D 5E Is there any hope of seeing ToB style maneuvers in 5e?

Yeah, that's why the Next fighter consistently outdamages every other class in the game, is one of the few classes that can pull off complex action combos thanks to the fighter's surge, is effectively immortal at higher levels and has a rudimentary maneouver system built into the core with the...

If you were paid to be a GM

I think and plan in-between or during other tasks. I just consume fiction and non-fiction for its own sake. Getting inspired for games is a byproduct, so I don't think it counts as time. 30 minutes or less 2-4 hours It would increase both significantly. Published adventures mean I actually...

DM Dilemma: Munchkins are getting out of hand... and I let it happen.

    0. I agree that they are playing (or seem to be playing) a hardcore Us vs. the DM kind of game. First clear up that up with them. 99,9% of gaming problems can be solved socially, with an out-of-game solution, setting the right expectations and getting everyone on the same page. If you don't want...

Oh great, a 9 year old reminder to never listen to anything Ryan Dancey says.

    D&D 5E 5E and CaS/CaW - Conclusions?

The core rules are definitely leaning towards CaW, I'd say. However, if you decide to use a stricter encounter building budget (optional) and stricter magic item regimen (optional) and combine it with the (yet unseen, and also optional) tactical combat module, I think you might actually have...

Legends & Lore: A Few Rules Updates

In my eyes this only strenghtens the argument that you shouldn't touch the dice if nothing interesting is going on, if there's no danger or risk of failure. If you're trying to pick that lock, you're rolling because if you fail, your tools are going to snap, or you'll trigger a trap or a...

    D&D 5E D&D Next Q&A: 01/24/2014

Uh...in my experience, even the most basic 5E Fighter outdamages the spellcasters in every instance. Spellcasters may have damage peaks that are on par with the Fighter's damage output but it requires burning significant daily resources of them. And that's without including the fact that the 5E...

    D&D 5E D&D Next Q&A: 01/24/2014

I don't want to be snarky, but maybe the problem isn't in the rules but in the players that are apparently competing with each other as to who gets "first blood" or "most kills" despite the fact that not one aspect of the game or its mechanics cares about that. You're a party. You're supposed...

    D&D Problems

I'd agree that LFQW and its related discontents are almost entirely an artifact/overhyped problem of 3.x/PF. Since those games hold almost 50% of the RPG market and most gamers have learned to play through them or played them or know of them in passing, this whole thing about balance has been...

D&D 5E it appears to be very easy to break the game

Uh...two completely different contexts. Shipping a finished game that requires work is pretty bad. Adding a few numbers to monsters in a playtest doc to update them to the mathematical standard of the PCs to enjoy the playtest more is a completely different thing.

D&D 5E it appears to be very easy to break the game

Of course, I'd like to see more stuff like that posted here. I apologize if I was overly dismissive, I'm just used to people being critical of the playtest rules without actually addressing the fact this is a playtest and the designers should be informed of any bugs we find. As for the build...

D&D 5E Playing Next without a Grid - Fighting Style: Protection

I personally don't have a problem with tracking everyone's relative position in my head. 99% of the time abstracts to adjecent/nearby/far, which some systems actually codify in the rules. So if you're adjecent you can use it, otherwise you don't. You don't need a battlemat for that, just say if...
