    Gamist, Narrativist, and Simulationist

Pretty much what nnms said. GNS jargon is misleading and not very accessible. But more importantly, it's not really meant to describe player types.

    Timmy, Johnny, Spike, and Vorthos

Actually, I think if you try to map the player types from the Revisited article onto GNS, then Timmy is the simulationist and Spike is the gamist...at least in terms of motivation. Sim or Right to Dream is about getting the right experience. Nar or Story Now is about expressing or saying...

Skills - what is your preference

More bothered that a character could get better at basketweaving or knowing about religion by killing monsters? No, I'm not in the least bothered, it's exactly how I think skills in D&D should work. In fact, it's not dissimilar to how Non Weapon Proficiencies worked. If they end up changing the...

"Gamism," The Forge, and the Elephant in the Room

I feel this is a fairly negative interpretation of GNS. First of, it's certainly a model. GNS is a part of the larger framework called The Big Model, which is a way (not the way) to look at games, specifically through the lens of social dynamics at the table. I also don't feel it's about...

"Gamism," The Forge, and the Elephant in the Room

There has to be a connection between what we're doing right now in the game and what we're doing in the game overall. Gamism does require the meaningful choice of being able to pick different tactics, strategies and solutions to problems. However, if all choices are "equal", in the sense that...

Vancian Casting and Rituals - A Solution

Why "can cast"? Under this system, the fireball could be conjured up in one minute (or 10 turns) if casting "from the book", after which you can fling it. Otherwise you cast it, and then store or "memorize" it. At an opportune moment, the fireball is released or "cast". Spells that need to be...

Dm Seeking Advice on How To Remotivate my self and my Group

Hey, terrya. As others have said, burnout is something that happens, especially if you've been playing together for a very long time. There are some things that you can usually do to refresh your gaming: -find new players to add to the group (you say this is very hard, but I'm still mentioning...

The new D&D Core: The "80/100" rule

As far as I'm concerned, that would mean they would totally lose me as a customer... Space for tinkering and change is not the same as shoddy, broken design. Also: in regards to "warlords being in the core or not"...the whole argument strikes me as incredibly inane. So if a class is in the...

Vancian Casting and Rituals - A Solution

This is pretty much what I've been going for in my homebrew, so I totally agree with this solution. I'm also hoping WotC does something similar.

Monster Roles mentioned by Monte Cook?

Hey, nnms, I think this is very much a creative agenda disconnect. I also think D&D has always been a 'step on up' game and if it satisfied people's 'right to dream' agendas it was because of the sparse rules (that were often twisted and ignored). Essentially, people were playing their own game...

Does clerical healing magic (e.g. cure light wounds) close wounds?

Sometimes/it depends. There are things that cause HP loss but don't cause wounds as such. HP loss was never intended to represent actual physical damage, not in 1e, not ever. I understand if someone dislikes Healing Surges as a mechanic, but this can never be an argument.

To Fudge or not to Fudge...

I never ever fudge. I find it defeats the purpose of the game. The reason why people fudge is because they don't agree with the game. Which means they should accept that the game isn't working for them. They are fighting the mechanics. It means that the rules they are using aren't supporting...

    Mearls: The core of D&D

"More 'realistic' combat systems could certainly have been included here, but they have no real part in a game for a group of players having an exciting adventure." p.9 "As has been detailed, hit points are not actually a measure of physical damage." p.61 "It is quite unreasonable to assume that...
