    Preview: The Shaman

You, sir, owe me a new keyboard. (And your coat is a bit ... brown, innit?)

Greece vs. Rome: Which is better for a Campaign?

Not only does ancient greece fit the points-of-light style of world better (IMHO), but they had a much bigger appreciation for both the individual hero and the "adventuring" band. The romans basically had to steal the greek myths because they were more impressive than most of their own. (On...

Laptops and PDA's at the table... what do you use?

I have a spare 4-year-old desktop-replacement-class laptop (15" 1920x1600 panel) that sits on a tray table to my right when I'm gaming. On it is excel running a quick and dirty combat tracker (sort by initiative column, track HP) which replace DMs familiar when I went 4e and all the rulebooks as...

items that are just better (aka power creep)

Don't some of those magic weapons not add additional Critical damage? That is a point against them, if true. Check all the powers of the armors as well.

"How to run a PC quick, clean and effective - Forked Thread: (...prevent Grindspace!)

I've been using some washers and also some wooden disks. The wooden disks are thick enough to write (in a small hand) the name of the power or effect on them.

[High level monsters and powers] What can Graz'zt actually do?

Well, the other strength of SR that I found was that given a GM screen, it was trivial to adjust the numbers of the opposition on the fly without anyone but me knowing. (there were some cases involving magic where the target # was the target's stat, and everyone knows what the damage code of a...

[High level monsters and powers] What can Graz'zt actually do?

Bad example - most of the critters in SR have arbitrary powers that the PCs can't have; and there's a goodly number of by-the-book unavailable-to-PCs powers kicking around. I always found one of the strengths of SR was that NPCs didn't have to follow the same rules for PCs outside of combat...

    Ghostwise - RPing and Rulewise

One last item for the threadjack - the PDFs are intended to be copied from; there was a mistake with one of the releases where it was locked down and Scott Rouse (IIRC) posted that this was a mistake and to tell the vendor if it happens again instead of just complaining here :)

    Proud Nails?

Agreed - even with 6 feats in the heroic tier, every character I've planned has wanted more feats :) For a specific wizard build I'd spend the feat; but in the general case? Nah.

    Why do 4e combats grind?

A mistake they appear to be trying to rectify - see Dragon 366 and Sacrifice to Caiphon (expend a certain amount of HP beased on power level to recharged a power that missed cleanly). There are some balance issues associated with it (I dont' have the thread to hand on the subject). I find...

    Adventurer's Vault 2 Playtest

Don't allow expenditure of healing surges in a rest where the PC isn't damaged. It's not that easy to expend healing surges outside of a rest.

DM's perspective: How to deal with the flaming sphere

Run more encounters per adventuring day, use many NPCs per encounter, and use larger encounter spaces. The wizard can only use it once (maybe twice, depending on items) per day. If you can force the Wizard to move, he can't move the sphere. And the NPCs want room to spread out.

    Spellscars= dragonmarks?

Feats, Paragon Path, Epic Destiny. Dragonmarks were fairly explicitly not a core part of the character unless they took a prestige class. They were always feats. So feats for the basic mark, then Paragon Path for the Dragonmark Heir equivalent, and Epic Destiny for Heir of Syberis.

Making a Samurai: AC and Armor problem

There does seem to be a bit of a gap right now for that. Role-wise, that's a striker, but the only 2-hand striker we have right now is the Barbarian, hardly a good fit for the samurai of legend, and also not a martial character. If you wanted to go katana+wakazashi, the ranger would be a good...

    Martial Power fighter combo

There needs to be a reason for the fighter to move - too many combats have the fighter and the BBEG just standing toe-to-toe hammering on each other like grim death, with no movement.

So I have the Martial Powers book.

Nice for the Elf Fighter, though. (The Eladrin Fighter likes it as well, what with Eladrin Weapon Prof)

    Martial Power Multiclass feats

Since the prereq: MC feats are themselves MC feats, you have to be able to take multiple MC feats from the same class. Interesting thought

    Martial Power Multiclass feats

While roughly half of the multiclass feats are prereq: Paragon Multiclassing, the rest have no particular non-stat prereq. By my reading of the PHB p 208, Inspiring Leader, Ruthless Efficiency, Sly Dodge, Tactical Leader, and Two-Blade Warrior all function as the initial multiclass feat for...

    Sacrifice to Caiphon - Overpowered?

The bag-of-rats rule is thankfully not needed to be spelled out in my campaign so far. (admittedly, most are veterans of my SR game, in which I made it quite clear I could drop a PC within the rules any time I wanted, so don't push it, eh?)
