D&D 4E Is 4E doing it for you?

I hated doing prep for 3E. I didn't have the time or desire to do it, so I ran published modules. The underpinnings of the system weren't shown, so I had little guidance on how to adjust them for my particular group of players. I stopped running 3.5 because I didn't have time to do an adequate...

    Ammunition Woes

Good point, there (leaving it to the groups). In that case, they either shouldn't have put in the ever-full quiver, or made it a lower-level item

Updated status on the revised GSL

Fromt hat post and others, it looks like WotC had engaged GTO to develop online versions of their games for hosting (and sale) on Gleemax. When the grand plans for Gleemax fell through, the games still existed, so they licensed them out to GTO to host on their own site. That way both sides get...

    Are scry durations too short?

As was said upthread - scry gives you spy shots, not audio bugs. If you have determined when the conclave of evil is meeting, you scry on it in the middle, to see who's at it, and get an impression of who wants to backstab whom (body language, etc). I would, IMC, allow someone to "stack"...

    Dealing with Healing Surges

Every so often, it can be fun to play in an encounter that is intended to have the party pull out all the stops. My DM just ran one of these for us; and boy howdy were we scared. I am reasonably sure the fighter was out of surges at the end, a few HP from being down for most of the fight, and we...

    Driders are opposite now: Discuss

This ain't the Forgotten Realms? (Though I suppose it could be changing in the Realms as well). It's not like Eberron didn't do something similar with drivers; and in that world the Drow have a freaky scorpion thing going...

    Help me grock the warlock

A human warlock can target 3 different defenses with his at-wills, and 2 of them will run off his prime stat. That's not too bad.

    Ecology of the Dragonborn up

For anything but the physical, no, not really. They're both creatures of myth and legend. They both tend to focus on a handful of human traits. And neither of them are interfertile with humans (Dark Sun excepted).

    Cost of Core Books PDFs

Blaming WotC for Amazon's etc predatory pricing is picking the wrong target. They can afford to make a margin that requires scientific notation to see. I really doubt Wizards can.

    Art of the Peel

Hit points and healing surges are purely metagame mechanics. The only thing a character should be able to observe (on either side of the screen) is whether their opponent is "bloodied" or not. There is no "in-game" explanation for or observation of hit points. At that point, the whole premise of...

    Who's a minion? You are!

Minions obvious, and when I get around to using elites or solos, they will be obvious also. Purely metagame on my part, though I can justify if I have to. This is nothing new for me, though - I ran several games in a couple of systems this way; I prefer the more pulp-like feel.

    Cost of Core Books PDFs

I doublechecked, and, yep, it's not just the D20 market. Battlecorps is selling the SR and CBT PDFs at roughly about the same discount as the 4E core books.

Forked Thread: Once per day non-magical effects destroy suspension of disbelief

Tagging like that causes me to not be able to read on my PDA - which has a white background for some reason...

Forked Thread: Once per day non-magical effects destroy suspension of disbelief

If your complaint is the one-liner descriptions don't make sense in the context of once-a-day powers that's a separate argument. I am not thrilled with the fluff for these powers myself. But descriptions are not rules. If you don't like the description, change it. I will be doing it for my...

    Reviewing the Artificer

Allowing an artificer to craft an item of level + 1 isn't broken - you still have to afford it. Allowing them to break down an item for more than 1/5 it's value is what may break the system. I'd be wary of anything better than the 1/5 rule, since the magic item pricing runs on that as well...

Mechanics vs Description (Forked Thread: Disarm rules)

Actually, I would, thanks. haven't come out and said it, but dazed is one of the conditions that could model what I'm looking for out of a disarm - target is less effective while he's getting his weapon back. There's nothing mechanical is Dazed that says "conked on the head" to me. All it says...

Mechanics vs Description (Forked Thread: Disarm rules)

Not in D&D, but in SR, I not only blatantly fudged to prevent PC death, but it was an explicit part of the campaign that the PCs would not die (though fates worse than death awaited). This was in partial reaction to the sheer amount of time chargen in SR took, I'll admit. OTOH, it worked. In...

Mechanics vs Description (Forked Thread: Disarm rules)

It's been a while since I checked the disarm rules, but IIRC it became pretty difficult for someone not trained to do so; to the point that you essentially required a 20 on your to-hit roll.

Mechanics vs Description (Forked Thread: Disarm rules)

Except that unarmed attacks do not provoke OA, and in fact Weapon keyword powers can be used with an unarmed attack. That's why I said "use Weapon -keyword powers with reduced effect". Other people have pointed out the problems with removing a weapon from the opponents in the Monster Manual -...

Mechanics vs Description (Forked Thread: Disarm rules)

Forked from: Disarm rules Forked because I wanted to address this specifically. What, mechanically, are you trying to accomplish with a Disarm mechanic? In much of the source material, a disarm ends the fight - one combatant disarms the other, places his blade at the throat of the other...
