    Appraising Gems - Any Suggestions?

An INT roll sounds good enough to me. Also, one skill that might work is Dungeoneering: gems come from out of the ground :) That said, I'd probably just tell the players what it's worth, and assume that appraising gems and other valuables is an ability that all adventurers get for free (bless...

    Sneak attack and Fey Step

I have a player with an Eladrin Rogue, who asked me if he could use Fey Step to teleport behind a kobold and then, because the kobold didn't know he was there, stab him with the sneak attack bonus. How would you rule?

    Insubstantial - Anything but damage?

If a creature or person is insubstantial, do they get any benefit other than halving the damage of melee and ranged weapons? Can an insubstantial character walk through walls, for example?

Stay back! The joy of OAs.

I agree it can be read that way, though that inyterpretation didn't occur to me before. The way I read it is, "An opportunity action takes place before the target finishes its action" where action is a standard action, move action, or minor action. In this case, it's always a move action. So the...

Stay back! The joy of OAs.

That question is actually what this whole thread is about. And <pause for dramatic effect> I have the answer! Earlier, I wondered: I've just stumbled over the Opportunity Attack action writeup on page 290 of the PHB where, lo and behold, it gives a different definition for this form of...

Stay back! The joy of OAs.

You've made the same mistake I made :). The fighter has a class ability that stops movement when he makes an OA.

Stay back! The joy of OAs.

Ah yes, I forgot about that (I actually meant to check up when it was triggered before posting, but got distracted). I started out thinking the OP's idea was illegal. Now I think there is room to go either way, but for my game I'll be going with the interpretation in MrMyth's most recent post.

Stay back! The joy of OAs.

The problem with this, is if you stop the person before moving into range of the polearm, he isn't in range of the polearm and you can't attack him. Thus, you couldn't make the attack! That problem doesn't occur with the official example.

Stay back! The joy of OAs.

Hmm. Yes. Yes, I did. <hangs head in shame> One thing is puzzling though. Why there is different text under the two sections. In Opportunity Actions, it has the text you list, and that is the full entry. In Immediate Actions, which are a different type of action, it lists Immediate Interrupt -...

Stay back! The joy of OAs.

Ah yes, you're quote correct. Oops. That doesn't change one thing though. Opportunity Attacks do not interrupt the action that triggered them, by the specific definition the game uses for the term "interrupt". An immediate interrupt does interrupt an action. An opportunity attack is not an...

Stay back! The joy of OAs.

Let's say that's true (but see next paragraph): the character moves into the square and triggers the opportunity attack. He gets hit, and stops. At this point he has moved into the square - so isn't held back the way this build is dependent on. But he isn't actually stopped. The fighters class...

Stay back! The joy of OAs.

Actually, opportunity attacks are Opportunity Actions, not Immediate actions. Check out PHB p268. Opportunity Actions do not have the same effect as an interrupt. So, the attacker marches up to the polearm wielder who gets his free attack, and then the attacker keeps moving.
