I agree with you, although I haven't changed that in my game. I also agree with the issue of frontloading the class. Making Bonus Feat choosable every four levels instead of five may balance it.

Instead of simplifying the skill list, increase the base skill points per level. It's a hell of a lot easier than combining skills.
