D&D 4E The Business of 4ed Part I: The Problem

White-Wolf didn't keep the stores open, Magic The CCG did. It took D&D 3E to bring RPG's back.

D&D 4E The Business of 4ed Part I: The Problem

As I stated in another thread I think the argument goes like this... How many RPG stores could remain open without D&D? I'm betting not many. When TSR was tanking Magic filled this revenue gap. Another point to consider is just how many people start with D&D and then move to another system...

D&D 3E/3.5 What if 3.5 and 4E split the market?

I can't see Hasbro selling off the D&D Brand for one simple reason. Who can afford to pay more than they will get by continuing novels and slapping the name onto computer games? See that's the problem this time. The Brand is still worth a lot without an RPG and unlike TSR if D&D fails for WOTC...

The Core Mechanic: New Design and Development

As other's have stated before this solves a gripe I've always had. Mainly that if something comes along that can beat my guy at his shtick whatever it happens to be, then everybody else is #$&#ed too. I like this. It means that other people can't out shine my character in his "area of expertise"...

    "Core" and Business Models

I'm pretty sure the only monster I would miss would be the dragons. As long as dragons are in I should be okay. They are pretty much the only monster that I find to be a requirement for a D&D campagin. All the others I can live with out. Actually I'm not really sure what the problem is here. If...

    "Core" and Business Models

Well if nothing else at least this change should put an end to the compliants some people have of the players looking in the MM during game time. I mean are metagaming players going to go and buy every MM just to cover the iconics? Probably not. And I have to admit I can't remember the last...

No Macs? Holy crap did WotC do the math wrong!

I've thought a bit more about my frustrations with bootcamp and I have few more things I would like to share. A big problem with using bootcamp or parallels (or other virtual machines) is that the software you are using isn't designed for your hardware. It's pretty obvious that fantasy grounds...

D&D 3E/3.5 What if 3.5 and 4E split the market?

First a thanks to the OP who got this thread started. I wrote the passage he quoted late (for me) last night and was thinking about starting a thread exaclty like this. Personally I feel that the RPG hobby would go from being a niche market to one that was entirely driven by people working in...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Does 4e sound more D&Dish to you than 3e did?

It's tough to believe but I think you just made me a litlle more excited about 4E. I had wanted to play something like you describe above but haven't been able to find any players. If 4E allows me to easily find players for this style game, I will be in heaven.

No Macs? Holy crap did WotC do the math wrong!

From here : macrumors So like I said earlier in this thread I really think WOTC is missing the boat with what should be one of their target audiences (post secondary students). Also a personal ancedote. I'm currently using bootcamp to run Fantasy Grounds on my mac. I've been unable to get it...

    D&D 4E Paizo and 4e - Vive le Revolution!

Wow. They've already won? I'm pretty sure that all the sales of all the third party companies added together wouldn't make a dent in WOTC sales numbers. Don't get me wrong I love playing and reading about non-D&D games but this statement sounds like a mac fanatic talking about how Apple is...

No Macs? Holy crap did WotC do the math wrong!

A couple of things... I work as a programmer for a Post Secondary Education Institute in Canada. And I can tell you that around here Mac sales among students are literally sky-rocketing. Our institution and others that we keep in touch with are all in the same boat. Our services for students...

    Custom One-Off Miniatures

Here's a great CNN video. In it they mention hoping to get the price to < $1000 dollars in a just a couple of years. One of the examples they cite is allowing home users to print out their avatars from online games :). When they hit sub $1000 I may just have to buy one.

    Custom One-Off Miniatures

I remember the idea of being able to order a custom miniature based off of a character created with DDI's character builder was bandied about here. I also remember their being a lot of debate about the actual costs involved. Well it looks like a company has managed to knock the prices down about...

Why Does Change Happen? - One Answer

I haven't been online since Friday and I expected to come back to my thread and see some angry people. Thanks for level-headed responses guys.

Why Does Change Happen? - One Answer

In the pursuit of fairness I will start off by telling you that I for one (and I realize I’m not the only one) am quite excited by everything I have heard so far about 4th edition. So that fact makes it much easier for me to make some of the following arguments. I realize that many of the things...

D&D Game Table not Mac-Compatible at launch

I'd like to point out that people with Mac's have very little incentive to go out of their way to set-up a virtualization/dual-boot environment in order to run this software. Not only would doing so involve significant costs ($80 for VMware Fusion or Parallels*, >$100 for windows) it also...

    Increased magic across the board?

Whoops, really sorry about that. That post had nothing to do with this topic or forum at all. Sorry for bringing my preaching to a completed unrelated topic.

D&D Game Table not Mac-Compatible at launch

I thought Parallels 3 (like VMware fusion) only supported DirectX 8.1? I think for shader 2.0 you will need DirectX 9 or higher?

D&D Game Table not Mac-Compatible at launch

I'm guessing the real problem here is that WOTC doesn't really have "lots" of money to spend on this stuff. So what does that mean? Well it means they probably shopped the software specs they wanted around to various companies. And then picked the one that offered to do it for the least amount...
