Free Keep on the Shadowfell at Wizards.com

I have a suggestion: skip the room entirely. It's a trainwreck. First off, there are a ton of safe spots in it. Even if your players are willing to say "Well, the statues are very clearly traps, but maybe our characters don't know that" and eat a swing from the knight to start things off...

    Co-op game recommendations

Thanks for all of the feedback, everyone! We had 6 or 7 when I brought it to the whole gaming group, but I'd played it with most of them in smaller groups at least once before. It does seem like it's moving a little more quickly each time, but I struggle to picture it ever not dominating an...

Dear 4e, Please Stop with the Horrible Portmanteaus!

Uh.... what? Where do you think super-dominant Anglican surnames like Baker, Smith, and Miller come from? My own surname may mean something in Gaelic rather than something in English, but that's because it's not an English name.

    Co-op game recommendations

Hi gang! I just threw Arkham Horror at my gaming group for the first time, and while almost everyone loved it, the fact that it takes for-freaking-ever is a bit of an issue. It's also the only co-op game in our repertoire at the moment, so I'm looking to expand on that with something that...

    Concerned about paladins.

FWIW, CharOp generally considers Paladins to be the most powerful defender in the game at the moment, due largely to their ability to punish multiple enemies via Divine Challenge/Sanction in a turn -- while Fighters and company may be sticky, their marks still require Immediate actions, which...

    D&D 4E Running 4E combats quickly

I've been rolling this idea over in my head for use in my own games, and I'm almost totally on board with it. One thing I am curious about, though, is whether this has had any effect on how descriptive your players are in combat -- I can see this as inadvertently driving players into the "I...

    arkham horror strategies?

I just jumped on the Arkham bandwagon last week and have been through two mostly-games so far -- both times we had to call on account of length, but it's been a good experience. In Michael's (the gangster's) defense, since he starts with a tommy gun, you can park his slider on 3 Fight/4 Will...

    I love the Feydark.

Personally, I think we need to find a new naming convention to beat into the ground. My group was never fond of "Underdark" anyway; it isn't under the dark, it's in the dark. It's really the Underlight, if anything. But that seemed like a bit colonialistic of us, so maybe it was just the Dark...

    Monster Manual 2 Survey

I'd be cool with this, but that said it would still be really helpful to include the monster art in the Adventure Tools. It'd be nice to have something to work with besides "apparently this is a humanoid reptile that carries two javelins."

So How Do You Recognize those High Level NPCs anyway?

This is and will always be the number one indicator.

    Revised Monk Available in Compendium

I'm a little disappointed by the Storm Pillar nerf. Sure, if you've got a Slide 4 power and hit the same guy 4 times using a single attack, yeah, kind of lame. At the same time, that seems like it's kind of the point of having so many push/pull/slide techniques -- to force your enemies into...

Half-Elf Diletante Ability: Any Good Synergies?

I just built a Valorous Bard earlier today and set my eye on the Paladin's Virtuous Strike, from Divine Power. It's charisma based but uses a sword, gives you some access to radiant damage, grants a save bonus, and can be used as a melee basic attack. The more I read that, the more ridiculous...

So, what is "4th Edition's Tomb of Horrors"?

I want to believe that over the course of a 12 level adventure, PCs will learn about most of Acerak's tricks long before they make it into the tomb.

Pathfinder 1E [Pathfinder] Planning on switching to Pathfinder?

This is pretty much the tune I'm singing as well. I never really expected to play a Pathfinder game, but I had hoped at least to use it as an idea well for houserules in case I ever play a 3.5 game again. Unfortunately, my impressions of the in-progress rulesets were... not so good. I'm...

    Monster Builder Details 7/13

Keyworded stuff should be pretty easy. What's going to be trickier is going based off of effect -- ie "I want an interesting power that pushes PCs around" etc.

Mearls talks about his inspiration for the 4e classes

To be fair to them, neither Marlon Wayans nor Jeremy Irons were the worst parts of that movie. :p

Is "Elder Evils" one of the books slated for 4E conversion?

    That's Claudio's work, isn't it? Very nice.

Which D&D "sacred cows" will be sacrificed in 5E?

Otyughs & Otyughs sounds like my new favorite game. Although O&O Insider is probably slightly more different from D&D Insider than the logos would have you believe.

How to run a Higurashi/Groundhog Day style game?

Alternatively, allow significant things to persist through the loop -- you clear the forest temple, and in the next cycle everything is fine in the forest area (which will in turn have some logical effect on the other areas) and so on and so forth.

    Commanders Strike Range

This is incorrect. The FAQ states "The target of the Commander's Strike must be within melee reach of both the Warlord and the chosen ally who will make the basic melee attack." There's no condition on where the warlord is relative to his ally, just that they both can reach the target.
