Would this break a fantasy setting for you?

Modern names in a fantasy setting would be a deal breaker for me. I have always found that names are one of the most important aspects of any game. Mainly to help with the suspension of disbelief and to help players immerse themselves into the game. I for one would not be able to take a...

    Running gags

There is a saying that all my gaming friends use whenever their character fails a roll or does something silly. " I was eating a lolly" (ie a lolly is a candy). It all happened on the way to a convention. We had 8 people squeezed into the front and back seats of my friends car. On the way...

Player Control, OR "How the game has changed over the years, and why I don't like it"

After watching that vid i felt a little ashamed at being a gamer.

    E.G.G. On Realism & Combat

Excellent point. I believe a lot of players have forgotten what original D&D and Ad&d were like to play. Combat was to be avoided or at least stacked in your favor. Trying to level by combat alone would be a fruitless and dangerous undertaking as monsters gave very little xp. A kobold or...

    Why can't i find a system i really enjoy?

I can empathize with your plight ChaoticTabris. I have also found myself in the same kind of rut. As a whole every system has its weaknesses and strengths. If your gaming just try to enjoy the game and not worry about the system as a whole. And if your GMing try to find a game were you can...

    What's a good game for...?

Nearly any rpg can be used 1 on 1, but i can give you some suggestions. Gurps. Just grap the free quick start rules. Ad&d 1st or 2nd editions. TSR bought out the Fighter, Mage, Thief and Cleric challenges that are designed for 1 on 1 play. Warhammer FRPG 2nd edition Runequest StarWars RPG WEG...

    Should Roleplay Determine Character Advancement?

Danger, Will Robinson Danger!! Roleplaying is subjective. How I roleplay is going to be different to how others roleplay. Making all character advancement based on roleplaying is saying you have to roleplay they way the GM wonts or no levels for you. In a group that works well i can see...

The D&D Experience (or, All Roads lead to Rome)

If D&D is Rome then that would make WotC Commodus and Hasbro Caligula. Mod Edit: This is what is commonly known as a Threadcrap. Please don't use otherwise innocuous threads as a venue for spewing non-constructive negativity. You are welcome to your opinions, but please try to make something...

What Should You Be Able to Accomplish in Four Hours?

I apologise for misinterpreting your post. FF rpg is a rules lite system based of of the FF game books. It allows you to do pretty much anything you like. But it is only a suggestion.

Cyclone Scenario - What would you do?

I think i have used nearly every natural disaster there is against my players. Depending on the game and the tech level will depend on if they get any warning or not. A ranger or druid is good in a party for detecting that something is amiss. This usually gives the players time to get to...

What Should You Be Able to Accomplish in Four Hours?

Have you looked at the old Fighting Fantasy Rpg. Its a blast for pure hack & slash dungeon goodness.

    Did you survive 1-20?

In different systems i have had characters survive into the teens or late teens. I have never got a legit character to 20th level. But i did play a few one offs with 20th level and higher in D&D In a huge Palladium Fantasy my friend DM'ed i had a Wolven Soldier called Mangonel he got to 11th...

The break-down in believability at higher levels of play

You could give all the goblins wands of lightning. Then see if it takes the players longer than 5min to mob them up. He does stop the odd alien invasion or planet busting asteroid. But i don't think he has a foreign policy.

    Walking away from a game...

I have left a few games but this is the most memorable. My brother and I were convinced by a friend to join in on a Robotech game. All was cool, we created characters and started the adventure. The GM put me and my brother in one Mech. No problem there as we both chose destroid pilots. He...

Why is "I don't like it" not good enough?

I hope i dont get flamed for this but here goes. I believe the way the game is played has changed from the good old 80's were the GM was a ruler on high. ( i use this analogy as most games had to be house ruled and since the GM was doing all the work most players just accepted what the GM said...
