Please Help a 1st-timer Build a Grappler for AL

Do not take the grappler feat, as it is a total waste. There is no pin condition. Both you and the creature grappled become restraint and you do not want to have restraint condition upon yourself. Just shove, prone, pummel. You are much better off that way.

Multiclass Vengence Paladin for Curse of Strahd or no?

Yet, another feat you have to invest in. This might surely take some time.

    D&D 5E Dwarven Battlerager Build

The Grappler feat is very poor and risky, since the restraint condition is applied to both, you and the creature, negating all advantage/advantage relations between you and your target. Not only that, but attacks made by other creatures against you have advantage, while yours have disadvantage...

D&D 5E Question about magical shields...

I was not only referring to Tavern Brawler, but the paragraph "Improvised Weapons". Shields were used offensively in a fight, and they can hurt, too! Shield Master does not cover that, since a shield bash proning someone would definately leave it's marks on him. A shield bash shoving someone...

D&D 5E Question about magical shields...

Stop for a moment there. By that thought if I pick up Tavern Brawler it would negate the effect of the Dueling Fighting style. It will definately do so, when I use my shield for a bonus action attack on my turn while attacking with my sword primarily. But as long as I do not use my shield like...

    D&D 5E Dwarven Battlerager Build

On a sidenote, you get your 18 Str score (+4 mod) at lvl 4, too. You would have +6 athletics at lvl 4 and +8 at lvl 9. Even without increasing Str to 20 at lvl 8 you are only 1 point behind and as I said, your advantage on Str checks while raging will help the most with grappling and proning.

D&D 5E Question about magical shields...

Yes, but taking an educated guess both Dueling and BB/GFB just state that they require a weapon. They do nowhere state that it has to be simple or martial weapon. Just a weapon. So an improvised weapon should qualify just the same, even by RAW.

    D&D 5E Dwarven Battlerager Build

Well, there isn't much you can do, in case of optimization, since the 'pure' barbarian is a somewhat straightforward class with 5 ASIs, no spells to choose from (wouldn't work with rage anyway), and Battlerager demands a dwarf. The only thing I can give you is, check on how much damage you'll...

    D&D 5E Dwarven Battlerager Build

He needn't have every charm spell, yet Dissonant Whispers is nice to have with strong melee characters, who know how to position themselves. And it's a lvl1 bard spell. When you have none of those left he can use any higher one and that will also increase the psychic damage dealt.

D&D 5E Question about magical shields...

Who says I would do dual wield with sword and shield? It's just the shield and a free hand. Prone, grapple, pummel (with the shield), rinse repeat. The sword is just in case I can't grapple/prone. Also as long as I use the shield as a weapon while having my other hand free (or grappling...

    D&D 5E Dwarven Battlerager Build

The PDK might instead become a Paladin of the Crown. The PDK is nice late game, but the 'ramp up' is too strenuous imho. Rallying Cry is a great emergency measure (if one or more companions are down to 0HP), Royal Envoy is a waste, since you have a bard and too bad it's the lvl 7 deal, Inspiring...

    D&D 5E Dwarven Battlerager Build

If your campaign will go that far and you run into a lot of (evocation) spell casters, or lots of accurately hitting mobs you might consider upping your survivability like this...especially when your party has no capable main healer.

    D&D 5E Dwarven Battlerager Build

Tavern Brawler is actually pretty good for a grappler. You get half an ASI. If you use a shield, it then also can function as your weapon. With the Shield Master feat any dex save forced by spells/effects that affect only you will be done with your shield's AC bonus on top. With a magic shield...

    D&D 5E Dwarven Battlerager Build

Grappling requires at least one free hand, so Shield Master would not be enough. Tavern Brawler will be needed either, so that you can use the shield as your weapon with proficiency. This would not be that bad, as you trade the d8 of your primary attack for a d4, but in return you get additional...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Revenant Subrace, Monster Hunter, and Inquisitive

The revenant misses the darkvision trait. Is there actually any undead, who does not have darkvision? Otherwise a dragonborn revenant oathbreaker paladin sounds like fun. According to UA Half-Orcs and Half-Elfs do not qualify for the Revenant subrace like any other ummentioned race without a...

Multiclass Vengence Paladin for Curse of Strahd or no?

GFB and BB are somewhat undesirable for polearm wielders as you can only use such at 5 feet, while as a PAM you want to keep the bad guys at 10 feet. Further I wouldn't want to go against any undead or lycans with a -1 inititative and being surprisable. Those creatures are meant for ambushes...

Please Help a 1st-timer Build a Grappler for AL

Since the Leo DiCaprio's bear scene in The Revenant people should know that bears can grapple with their paws and jaws. Just show your DM... If the ghostwise halflings (SCAG) qualify for AL, I would probably choose that race over humans when going moon druid.

    D&D 5E The Grappler's Manual (2.0) - Grappling in 5th Edition

Afaik Zoltar does not belong to the WotC crew, yet his answers are taken into account even by them. About your comment regarding character progressions and grappling, I assume most characters need some form of progression time. The barbarian might be great for grappling out of the box because...

D&D 5E Question about magical shields...

MMh, guess I'll be at my DMs mercy then. Although I think the argument about a devotion paladin, using his shield as an improvised weapon and channeling Sacred Weapon on it might be a point. It becomes magical too, but the game does not have a distinction between 'battle magic', 'protective...
