Interesting; I'd prefer less whitespace and divided statblocks (or, alternatively, fill the whitespace with pictures or something). It's not like I'll use the statblock directly from the book much of the time. My other comment is that I prefer paragraphical fluff to having most of it in the...

Perhaps you are more familiar with 4e size rules than I am. I assumed that it was much like 3.x (essentially -1 to damage). Also note that ranged weapons can use Dex (instead of Str) for damage. In any case, if we removed the Str modifier, do you think that some benefit should be removed (or...

D&D 4E Character conversion problems for 4e (Short Essay)

Barbarian Barbarian was originally a class in Dragon, which was re-printed (slightly changed) in Unearthed Arcana (1st ed AD&D). If you're referring to OD&D, then you've forgotten the Halfling class. The UA version was a fighter-type with very slow advancement (slower than a Magic-User), lots...

Yes. I consider it a guideline, not something which is cast in stone. If you're looking for guidelines that I broke above, note that feats aren't supposed to grant Powers, either (at least in the core races). My thought is: 1) Low strength of Pixies is an important feature of the race. 2)...

    Excerpt: Racial Benefits

Depends on the game. In some campaign worlds, yes - as long as the other players don't object. I'd warn them about equipment problems in advance, though. To take an example from my present campaign, I banned Orcs as a race (not half-Orcs). This is primarily because they were all killed a while...

D&D 4E Character conversion problems for 4e (Short Essay)

Heh- My 3.0 Bard (translated to 3.5) really became an Archer, with healing/buffing/information gathering support magic. It looks like a Ranger would do, with some M-class, likely into Warlord (for healing - Cleric may not work due to the sunken Wisdom). Is it perfect? No. But I doubt that the...

D&D 4E Character conversion problems for 4e (Short Essay)

Interesting point (though I could quibble with the details). I suspect that this is to give the designers more design space for PH II+. For example, if the Wizard is a good Beguiler, Illusionist, and Enchanterer, there's little design space for classes based off of those concepts.

D&D 4E Character conversion problems for 4e (Short Essay)

Good points, although my choices are different than what you recommend. I moved the Int bonus over to Cha; since Int and Dex mostly overlap, it seems that it's better to grant a bonus to one than both. Alternatively, I could have moved the Dex bonus over. I'm assuming that Small size is a...

D&D 4E Character conversion problems for 4e (Short Essay)

At the moment? A Halfling Wizard with a few fluff changes. No, it wouldn't be close. Seriously, were you in my game, I'd probably want to play with 4e for a little while prior to trying to make that difficult of a cross; it sounds like you'd want a new class and a new race.

D&D 4E Character conversion problems for 4e (Short Essay)

Your article is pretty good. I'll note that the vast majority of my PCs (from a variety of editions) could change over with few problems. My 3.0 Sorcerer, for example, could be a Warlock, a Wizard, or a combination of the two without much problem. A few of my 3-way multiclass PCs from 1st ed...

D&D 4E Making the Character I Want to Play in 4e (Long)

I am very impressed that you're still interested in playing a character you played in 3 previous editions. I can only think of a handful of characters (out of dozens) that I bothered to translate between even adjacent editions. I am also a little surprised that your PC's weapons defines your...

    Excerpt: Multiclassing (merged)

Personally, I'd prefer to specialize. Generalization (barring poorly designed rules) tends to make the party as a whole weaker. If you continue in 3.x, just pick your spells carefully, create magic items judiciously, and wait to level up a few more times. By LV 13 or so, a 3.x Wizard/Sorcerer...

    Excerpt: Racial Benefits

Nope. Diagonals are always 1, which means that a square and a circle are pretty much the same thing. So a cone in a world with 4e geometry would look like a square above the grid. Which is why I prefer my diagonals to at least approximate sqrt(2); intuition breaks down quickly when you leave...

    Excerpt: Multiclassing (merged)

We've seen at least 1 feat (Dwarven Weapons Training) that grants quite a bit more than +1 to hit, so I'm under-convinced that Student of the Sword is the way to go for hitting. You are likely correct, but note that with re-training, the player can correct such a bad choice. This looks like a...

    D&D 3E/3.5 4E Ruined My Love For 3.5

The simplest technique I've found isn't even a rules change - just heavily encourage major spellcasters to use buffs, and lots of them. If needed, create some more spells, pump up their power, and/or give them to the spellcasters for free so that they have plenty of buffs to use. Assuming that...

    D&D 3E/3.5 4E Ruined My Love For 3.5

I find it odd that many posters are complaining about the time and effort it takes to prepare for and run a 3.x game; I find that it takes only marginally more time than the most rules-lite published RPG I've run (AMBER: Diceless RPG). The typical creature or trap takes me on the order of 2...

    D&D 4E 4e homebrew familiars

I'm unclear as to what you're looking from from familiars, but the easiest way to solve the combat issues is to make familiars non-combatants. Anther solution would be to have them only attack during a Wizard's basic melee attack, and to just add damage (+2? +Cha mod?) to the Wizard's basic...

    Excerpt: Paragon paths (merged)

I was thinking about allowing the powers gained at LV 13, 15, 16, 19 to be chosen from either a list from the initial class or a list from the paragon path. This isn't in the WOTC text, but it's something that might have given these paths a bit of extra meaning without changing their power...
