Analysis of Initial release of PCs

Good point on the feat (updated accordingly). I'll note that I made that assumption in pre-3.0, and it was wrong at the time (halflings get +1 to all saves in 3.x). I'll stick with the 3.x assumption until there's evidence otherwise.

Analysis of Initial release of PCs

Initial post updated with the below, and race/class distinctions. Thanks; I updated with your suggestion. I'll note that Will is a worse fit than the solution I proposed, but the others are better, and your suggestion for Will would then be consistent. Updated accordingly. I'm guessing race.

Analysis of Initial release of PCs

I've done a bit of analysis of the LV 1 PCs recently released by WOTC; this is a write-up of some of my findings, modified from input from most of the posters below (see the posts below for detail). As expected, at LV 1, attribute modifiers are calculated the same as in 3.x HP at LV 1...

The Best & Worst of 3rd Edition: SINGLE BEST Product of 3rd edition (poll closed)

Interesting selection Frankly, none of my favorites are on here. I'm surprised that the PH, for example, isn't present, nor either of the DMGs, nor the 3.5 MM.

4th ed, the Good & the Bad?

My last significant campaign ended in the low 20s, so that's the reference point that sticks out most in my mind. At that point, a LV 23 spellcaster isn't worried about the low-level spells (which, of course, at LV 7 are all their spells, and then some). Sounds like what I'm thinking of...

4th ed, the Good & the Bad?

Enough Sneak Attack? Perhaps. I was more thinking of Fly (or in some cases, Spider Climb) vs. Balance/Tumble/Climb/Jump, Freedom of Movement vs. Escape Artist/Swim, Knock (or just a heavy damage spell) vs Open Lock/Disintegrate/Passwall, Dimension Door/Teleport vs Disable Device. Invisibility...

D&D 5E Critical Hits Appears to be Next in D&D Archive

Fighter vs. Wizard Perhaps against a single opponent, particuarly compared with a non min-maxed Wizard, but even with a non-min-maxed Wizard, assuming 6 opponents, negligible SR and no fire resistance: Fireball (10d6, save for 1/2) Assume 1/2 make their save. Total damage = 3 * 10d6 + 3 *...

4th ed, the Good & the Bad?

edition comparison I loved playing 1st and 2nd ed Thieves (and Assassins in 1E and Bards in 2E) largely because they got to higher levels more quickly; they were typically 1-2 levels above the rest of the party, which made up for quite a few of their problems (bad HP,poor chance to hit...

4th ed, the Good & the Bad?

The main problem is that the vast majority of the skills that the Rogue is good at become irrelevant around LV 7 or so when the Wizard/Sorcerer/Cleric/Druid has spells that replicate or are better than the vast majority of them. Furthermore, in core 3.x, most skills are useless or nearly...

Chainmail Bikinis & other Cheesecake art in the 4th Edition Core Books.

art and gender Personally, I think that there are two traps that one can get into: 1) Portraying one gender in a vastly different manner than the other. For example, if all your males are bound, scantily clad, and sexy, and all the females are muscular, heavily armored, and fighting the...

4th ed, the Good & the Bad?

Sneak attack :) Seriously, another option (other than make immunity to sneak attacks rare or non-existent) would be to re-make the rogue so that such a PC can have other useful things to do in most combats other than sneak attack (without carefully designing one's PC to be able to do so).

4th ed, the Good & the Bad?

My present thoughts 1. NO MORE LEVEL DRAIN - Good. All versions of level drain were annoying both in implementation and in the potential long-term effects to PCs. 2. NO MORE ABILITY DRAIN - Neutral. I'll note that I preferred 3.xE ability score damage to prior editions' save or die mechanic...

WotC_PeterS talks about his "aggresive playtest" (with Le Rouse, SKR, & Noonan)

To me, the model itself would be "fun" :) However, note that I'm not a professional game designer. I'd guess that a number of inter-compatible, easily learnable options that give different but comparable results under a specific set of preconditions would be a good place to start. Another way...

WotC_PeterS talks about his "aggresive playtest" (with Le Rouse, SKR, & Noonan)

Less playtest may be good. I guess I've not done much game playtest (and even less was RPG playtest), but coming over from my professional field (real-time medical instrument engineering), large amounts of testing are the last resort of a company that doesn't know what it's doing. A company...
