Using mood music properly in RPGs- looking for advice

Playing a medieval themed game ATM, but we generally play medieval music at a low volume, so it isn't intrusive, and it suits us enough. Used to have major pitfalls... Lord of the Rings soundtrack, I'm looking at you. Too much epic drumming!

Simple Systems for a Starter Storyteller?

Hmm.. AHA!!! True20. It's a nice system with only 3 classes - basically warrior, skills, mage. The system does not go in depth on strategy, but is quite quick and fast. Abilities to do with magic are not particularly culture specific - you could have a mage with the "Summoning" talents for a...

Simple Systems for a Starter Storyteller?

Well.. there's Legend of the Five Rings which is to oriental folk tales what D+D is to Western ones. I didn't mind it myself but we never did get into it too much. Lots of quick drawing and strange demons. There's also Sengoku. Never played it myself but I've heard its more 'historically' based.

What are your indispensible "Hand Waving" tools for coming up with stuff on the fly?

Two people/things kick in the door holding guns/crossbows/laser beams. If more are required, so be it. It will point them in the right direction. If no door is available I use lots of lovecraftian words to describe something I have no idea what it is. The players get their own impression.. :D...

    The Mystery of The katana

Having seen a few fights with katana vs. sword and shield and katana vs. longsword, my general feeling is the longsword has a reach advantage and a shield has a defensive advantage. Tried to find the Swordplay 10 longsword tournament (Had a few Katana practitioners with eastern martial arts...

    The Lead Up..

I'm interested in your stories. At what point did all of those early adventures suddenly make sense? Which point did you drop the bomb on the PC's, in such a way that engaged them - generally midway through the campaign - that suddenly made them all go 'Whoa!' and engage like you had never seen...

Players: it's your responsibility to carry a story.

Hmm.. Can't say I've personally had this issue. I've had passive players before but even they know a hook when its biting. Personally interested players might be the key. If I have an adventure the players should be wanting to play it; why are they buggering around in some tavern? I hit them...

Alrighty guys, looks like we've come to an end. Hope you've had fun, but it looks like the interest has dried. No probs! Have fun in future guys! - And the young covenant of mages did get the hell out of the demon-infested covenant and went somewhere safe to spend the rest of their lives.

Just one of those days . . .

Aha. Ars Magica has a fun mechanic which is on certain rolls if you roll a 1, the following dice is doubled, unless you roll a 1 again which means it is tripled. Epic final battle against a wizard in a flying ship and his ghostly armies. Massive dragon comes down to toast us. The powerful...

    Reducing Options to Increase Fun

I wrote an article for A KotDT mag on pretty much this topic. They were nice enough to publish me :D. My experience was coming from a game where the game world drastically limited the amount of races you could play - in effect, human. As such, each person defined themselves much more fully as...

Even as the lot of you just finish stuffing things into sacks, you each hear the footsteps of the baron and his armed men. "What a wonder.. to think an entire collection of rooms was hidden under here!" mentions the baron excitedly.

A couple of simple spells later, and you find - Lab texts. 150 levels of them to be precise. The way I do lab texts is basically you get a number worth of lab texts, you go looking through them to see if a lab text is there. You roll a dice, the difficulty is the magnitude of the spell. If you...

The sharp smell of herbs tinges your nostrils, and the chests warp and buckle... The first reveals a number of scrolls, papers, tomes, scratchings and small pieces of artwork with scribbles over them. The second reveals a number of bits of rock, snails, a scattering of mouse droppings and what...

Looking for a Good First Timer RPG

If she likes the Dresden Files world and books, I'd play those first. If you can play a game where she feels comfortable and not out of her element, it's going to be a little easier. If she likes modern things, do the Dresden thing or if you have it in you the latest Mage. The actual rules...

Actually I feel you've been adding a lot to the game, Shayuri, and I'd really hate to lose you out of the game because you add a vital spark to the game. (The comment about the character was directed at walking dads character, and I was the one who made it :D) . It is a difficult system to...
