    Anybody else doing NaNoWriMo?

I'm 5,768 words in now. Slow going :-/ No doubt because I've read 11 books cover to cover in the last 14 days... Not a great NaNoWriMo strategy.

    [November] What are you reading?

I'm 480 pages into The Stand, which was probably not the greatest book to start when I'm A: suffering from a cold, and B: trying to do NaNoWriMo. Hrmph.

    Anybody else doing NaNoWriMo?

I'm only 4,645 words in now, so don't feel bad :) Plus maybe another 500 words of outlining and character brainstorming...

    Anybody else doing NaNoWriMo?

I'm participating in NaNoWriMo for the first time this year. I've never written anything over 13,000 words before, and I'm enjoying the challenge. I'm only 3,930 words in so far, though, a bit over half where I'd like to be now. I'm writing a fantasy Western. Anyone else?

    [November] What are you reading?

I'm fairly sure I've been gushing too much about Cornwell in the last few months' threads, so I'll just say - good choice :) I've been reading a LOT of Louis L'Amour lately. Short stories, mostly. I've had Westerns on the mind, and am in fact a couple thousand words into a fantasy western for...

Good *Audio* Fantasy or Science Fiction

Gotta second the Dark Tower audio books. Some great stuff there.

    [October] What are you reading?

I realized a while back that despite owning many copies of LotR and the Silmarillion, neither my wife nor I owned The Hobbit. I rectified that situation yesterday with the gorgeous green collector's edition. I'm only a couple of chapters in. Awesome stuff :)

    [October] What are you reading?

You don't want to know how long I spent as a young teen trying to find an unabridged version of that book.

    [October] What are you reading?

I just finished a reread of The Princess Bride. Good stuff!

    [September] What are you playing?

    Sid Meier's Colonization.

Good *Audio* Fantasy or Science Fiction

They are sort of on the edge of being fantasy and historical fiction, but Bernard Cornwell's Arthur stories, the Warlord Chronicles, are amazing in audio. They're a little hard to find in CD, though. The first one is The Winter King, and I highly recommend it.

Good *Audio* Fantasy or Science Fiction

The audio Silmarillion is really, really good, but it's also pricey and niche. I do not regret the expenditure a bit; I've gotten LOTS of use out of it, for myself and others. The audiobooks of the Dresden Files are excellent, and Jim Butcher loves the same style of creepy, amoral fey that...

    Some Savage Worlds questions...

I'm not familiar with the specific Gritty rules variant you mention, but I can tell you that with exploding dice, it is really, really easy for a single attack to take a PC from 100% to flat on his or her back. If they have a benny or bennies to burn, they'll almost certainly be okay, but the...

    [September] What are you reading?

I've read some Jeeves and Wooster. Fun stuff :) This is making me want to read more Chesterton.

    [September] What are you reading?

I'm a few chapters into Three Men in a Boat and absolutely loving it. Thanks for the recommendation, Gilladian! :)

    [September] What are you reading?

I read The Name of the Wind and Wise Man's Fear over the course of the last week and a half or so. I was extremely impressed. Kvothe is funny in that he hits basically every indicator for a character being a Mary Sue, but doesn't come off that way at all. I'm currently halfway through The Two...

    Western Movie Choices

Ravenous is really good. And I second The Good, the Bad, and the Weird. Both excellent fun. I really need to see Paint Your Wagon.

    [August] What Are You Reading?

I just finished The Man who Counts, again by Poul Anderson. I gotta stop reading Nicholas van Rijn stories >.< I really dislike the recurring character archetype that Anderson uses as a foil for van Rijn - the capable-but-unimaginative young man who chafes under van Rijn's command, doesn't...

    [August] What Are You Reading?

I love Poul Anderson. I just burned through Three Hearts and Three Lions again and I'm in the middle of re-reading The Broken Sword. If you haven't, I'd highly recommend checking out Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories. They're set in the time period of The Broken Sword, and while they're...

    [August] What Are You Reading?

I just finished The Wind through the Keyhole, Stephen King's latest Dark Tower story. It's not really part of the main storyline, although it has a framing story of Roland telling his ka-tet a tale from his early life. It has a nested story structure like Sin City movie - part 1 of Story A, part...
