On building a coherent variant combat system...

For a variety of reasons, the combat system of standard D&D is unsatisfactory to me. Basically, it's just not gritty enough, and it relies too much on spells and magic items. Please don't suggest Iron Heroes to me (it has its merits, but it's not for me). I've been through several variants...

Illusionist with a hostage, what would you do?

Seriously. Do it. See if the DM will allow a called shot on the hand or shoulder or something. If it's an illusion, the arrow will pass right through and hit the wizard. If it's real, well... you'll have one POed NPC, but not dead.

Is there anything that sort of mixes tanglefoot bags and arrows?

Dragon 349 apparently featured "tanglefoot bolts." With this precedent, I'm sure you can make up some tanglefoot arrows with very little work.

Is there anything that sort of mixes tanglefoot bags and arrows?

There were a bunch of sweet alchemical arrows in CAdv. Was there not something like that in there?

What did the hand say to the face?

I hope you all know the joke that I'm referring to. But how would the situation be handled in D&D? Say your PC is having a conversation with an NPC in a tavern. You're both a little drunk, and the NPC says, "What did the hand say to the face?" to which your PC responds, "What?" Is this a...

    The Inquisition

I would really like to run a campaign based in a setting that has strong traditions against magic. A place where wizards are burned at the stake, where they are accused of consorting with demons (maybe they really do consort with demons), a place where wizards' guilds are very secretive, and...

    AoO for Heal skill?

Funny you should mention the rattlesnake. That's almost exactly the situation. My PC was bitten on the calf by some kind of serpent construct, and he failed his Fort save. My solution: 5 feet backwards, drop prone, and substitute the Heal skill for my next Fort save (tie off the wound).

    AoO for Heal skill?

Does the treat poison use of the heal skill provoke an AoO? Oh... and can you use the Heal skill to replace your own fortitude save?

    CON damage

    Oh! Thanks for the clarification.

    CON damage

Don't PCs only receive one hit point per level for each two points of CON? Why the inconsistency?

    Non-stereotypical versions of PHB races

Well, I've turned the evil factor on the Dark Elves down a notch... or rather, turned up the sympathetic factor. They're basically just hedonists that have turned to demon-worship, mainly as a rebellion against their stoic, cast-based High-Elven cousins. The High Elves turned out to be a...

    Non-stereotypical versions of PHB races

I know it's not proper, but I have to give this a bump.

    Rite of Passage

Faiths and Pantheons had a PrC named Doomguide, members of an elite order of clergy of Kelemvor. They had an ability called "rite of passage" that let the priest lay someone to rest in a manner that greatly decreased the chances of the person rising as an undead. Has a similar class or ability...

    Eating Dragon Hearts

I use eating the heart of a dragon as a prereq for a custom PrC, but as far as WoTC material goes, I've seen nothing.

    Death deities in Greyhawk

Is there a deity similar to Kelemvor from FR in the standard pantheon (i.e. Greyhawk). You know, a lawful neutral protector of the dead, anti-necromancy type god?

    Spells - UA's : Incantations

I'm actually considering conforming a lot of spells to this system in order to capture the flavor of magic that I want: raise dead, planar binding, heal, etc...

    Ranged Combat At Night

I would imagine you see a hole in the wall. Invisibility means you don't see something that is there, rather than seeing something completely different (a wall). In order to disguise a door like the rest of the wall, you would require a figmentary illusion (a la silent image).

    BAB as a Skill

I toyed with this idea for awhile, and it turned out to be a retooling of the entire system- more work than I was willing to put in. Basically, what I came up with was that each weapon group (from UA) would be a different skill: light blades, heavy blades, axes, bows, etc. Each school of magic...

    Move Silently

Anyone else want to bite on this? I can't believe it's not in the RAW, at least not that I can find. It shoud be right there in the skill description.

So what's the penalty while moving at your full normal speed, but not running?
