I hate Tolkien: suggest a fantasy setting.

Not really. I loved LotR when I was a kid, and JRR made a great contribution to the fantasy genre. However, I feel like fantasy in general, and fantasy RPG's in particular, have been copying his work ever since. I want to get away from the Tolkienesque fantasy tropes and play something...

What is the preferrable option after a PC death?

I'm against cheese. Raise 'em if the party can convince a high-level priest that the character's heroism benefits the cause of their deity. Otherwise, let 'em stay dead. Introduce a new character if the character and the introduction make sense. I try to have enough interesting NPC's around...

    Western / Oriental Campaign themes

Stephen King's Dark Tower series is the quintessential fantasy western. It doesn't have any oriental influences that I can tell, but for the Western side, there's no better inspiration IMHO.

    FX in d20 Modern

Woops! Sorry, I think I placed this thread in the wrong category. If a Mod would be so kind as to move it to the appropriate category?

    FX in d20 Modern

The d20 Modern SRD has this to say about FX: However, I can't find anything related to spellcasting in any of the Advanced Class entries. Are there Advanced Classes capable of using FX in supplements, or am I missing something?

    Realistic Combat

In the core rules, one of the many types of modifiers is named the morale modifier. Pretty much the only situations it come up in are with bard spells, and a few cleric spells. It's fairly easy to arbitrate morale bonuses and penalties as a DM without a mechanical rule. However, if a rule is...

    Lethal Combat, Take 2

I'm pretty sure it's not. The newest version is available for $3.95.

    ToB Martial Adept Classes

How do the ToB martial adept classes stack up to the PHB classes? Are they balanced well? How do you feel about having a mixed party: a Fighter, a Warblade, a Wizard, and a Swordsage, or some other mix? Do the ToB classes outshine PHB Fighters, Paladins, etc.? Is it possible to pick and...

    What keeps your party together?

My current campaign began with the PCs escaping from individual holding cells and commandeering a prison ship. I made it clear that they had no reason or obligation to like or to trust each other, and that it would probably make for some really dynamic roleplaying if they didn't. Racism plays...

    Lethal Combat, Take 2

In regards to GnG, there are things I like and there are things I don't. I have looked at it, but I won't use it, mainly because PCs would never survive against an ogre or an evil sorcerer. One of the reasons people play DnD is for these combat scenarios. While I want them to think twice...

    Crafting poison

the corebooks don't really explain poison very well, and the rules are, IMO, lacking. CAdv goes into a little more detail, but it's still not what i wanted. i ordered a book callled Pale Designs: A Poisonmaker's Guide that covered the topic in-depth. the rules seemed a bit wonky, but it had lots...

    Lethal Combat, Take 2

Does anyone have any comments on the actual system that I presented?

    Lethal Combat, Take 2

It concerns me that there's next to nothing that a knife-wielder or an archer can do to really deal damage with a single attack. The case in point above was a Rogue, who has the SA option, but a knife Fighter can do no more than 1d4+str with a dagger (you can't even use PA with light weapons)...

What real world elements show up in D&D the least?

Hmm... Pigs, goats, cattle, stray dogs. There's also very little emphasis placed on agriculture. Sure, you may meet a farmer, but what does he farm? Oh, and too little sex... far too little sex. Maybe all adventurers are just anatomically incorrect.

    Realistic Combat

That's kinda the way it works in real life. Either the knife hits your heart, or it's an inch off. Big damage difference from just a little precision difference.

Hey, people in prison need D&D too!

Mm-hmm. They wouldn't let us have magazines, either. It's not an issue of politics or religion, by the way. It was just a bummer. Speaking of religion, though, I believe the only magazine we were allowed to have was Watchtower. Seriously, though, my experience would have been much better...

    Help me build a Shadowlord

Shadow Thief of Amn doesn't really lend itself to a PrC from Thesk, but since the setting's not FR, I don't know that it will matter. Why do two levels of fighter keep coming up in these builds? Is it for the two bonus feats? The entry requirement is only four feats, which a human can attain...

    Help me build a Shadowlord

Apologies. Honestly, I don't know how my DM is going to rule on this, or even if he'll allow it. I just know what I would do if I were ruling: I would nerf it. Since I looked at Nifft's link, I realize how extremely exploitable this ability is, and I don't want to bring that to a game. I...
