Robert J. Schwalb Blog Discussion; Feats: Do We need them?

I was only talking in context of Essentials, viewing it as a "beginner/casual" 4E as opposed to core 4E's full richness. My argument is that if a goal of Essentials was to simplify the game, they didn't go far enough and should have done something with feats too.

Robert J. Schwalb Blog Discussion; Feats: Do We need them?

The argument between feats or no feats is essentially the argument between AD&D and original/basic D&D. AD&D is all about using the rules to customize your character. With original/basic D&D, a fighter is a fighter is a fighter as far as the rules are concerned; the only customization is...

    You Can't Take Short Rests

The D&D Encounters adventures have gotten pretty good at slow-rolling the players. There are generally 4-5 encounters with only short rests allowed. This slowly makes them use up their surges until they enter the last fight of the encounter with just a handful left across the party. It's...

D&D 4E What do you think of the delve format used in 4E adventures?

Here's the thing about the delve format: focusing on tactical combat paints you into this corner. Tactical combat: what does this mean if you don't know the territory, the enemies' position, etc? Conditions: how do you push, pull, slide, restrain movement, unless you know where you are in...

D&D 4E What do you think of the delve format used in 4E adventures?

Personally, I think it's a tool that can be used well (as it is in March of the Phantom Brigade, Red Hand of Doom, and The Slaying Stone). But it has been overused by over earnest or lazy editors to bad effect.

    Legends and Lore: March 29th

To see the delve format done right, DM the current season of Encounters. March of the Phantom Brigade is an outstanding adventure that has tweaked the format so it flows very nicely and you don't have the flipping back and forth problem of the older style. It presents a setting: the ruins (and...

Has anyone attempted to gamma world(ize) D&D?

Yes, I have. I have a system I call DS4E which could stand for "the damn small version of the fourth edition of our favorite table-top rpg". It's evolved over the years and I mostly use it to free-form roleplay. Never tried a It's much simpler than what you propose. Characters are just the...

    I'm back - sort of

WotC is not in trouble. Magic: the Gathering has never been more popular in paper form. My understanding is that Magic Online has basically recovered from the v3 fiasco and is printing money. The console game is hugely popular. Also, Duel Masters is also very successul in Southeast Asian...

    New Legends & Lore

Classes should be managed more like "colors" in Magic. 4E powers should be managed more like Magic's mechanics. Feats are bad additions to the game because they steal design space from classes and powers and make the game harder to create and play with not enough upside. Skills are borderline...

Why are board games being sold as D&D?

I'm getting a major negative vibe towards my questions. The board games are expensive, and I don't want to get suckered into buying them just because they say D&D on the tin. I've read reviews on Amazon and around the web, but thought I could bring specific questions to an audience I thought I...

Why are board games being sold as D&D?

I missed the previous discussion. Thank you for the link. But since there have been so many replies to my thread, I'll reply here. Are the board games showing up anywhere besides core hobby game stores? What about the board games would bring players back to the table-top role-playing game? Is...

    Gamma World at wizards.com/dnd

Why is all of the Gamma World stuff squirreled away at Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Official Home Page The way they are presenting Gamma World just doesn't make any sense to me. Trying to find information and articles devoted just to Gamma World is difficult. It doesn't seem like a...

Why are board games being sold as D&D?

Does the D&D brand mean anything to board game buyers? Board games with an element of role-playing? What are these products supposed to mean to me as a D&D player? Are they accessories or additions to the game for me to use during our weekly game sessions? While I'm playing a bit of devil's...

    Essentials feat too powerful???

Spoken like a true player. No DM who would consider house-ruling or banning a RAW gives a :):):):) about what players think, let alone how many lives you've saved.

    Essentials feat too powerful???

No one in this thread has come close to convincing me that feats aren't one of the worst additions to the game since it's creation. Please, honestly: why are feats a good and necessary addition to the game? You don't get to answer this if you haven't actually played a full session of any other...
