Using a tabletop to write a novel

So I have a DM currently that I've played one session of D&D 5E with (but this could apply to any game really). The DM claims to be writing a novel and wants to use our game in the novel. He brought a large binder that I believe he has already written a lot of ideas in. What are your thoughts...

D&D 5E New to D&D and want to DM a game

Some other tips - Keep on the Borderlands and the new starter set are my immediate recommendations for new DMs. I can't stress enough that DMs start with a sandbox adventure. - If the players (everyone at the table) want to talk with NPCs the whole session, let them. If they want to ally with...

D&D 5E New to D&D and want to DM a game

This is key: The moments players will remember for years are driven by player choices and not your preparation. Be on the lookout for these moments in game. For example: the orc warlord has 25 hitpoints left. The PCs happen to be losing to the orcs and are stressing. The raging barbarian rolls...

    Converting Ravenloft for 5e

I did the exact same thing in the beta. I used the beta monsters and buffer the zombies a bit and made my own Strahd. Worked fine, fun was had by all. I did the same thing a few years ago in Pathfinder. Converting most of these old adventures is just monster swaps. It was four level four PCs. I...

D&D 5E What technology do you own that you are willing to bring to the table?

I try to limit the amount of stuff at the table - I've found a lot of apps and visual representations just slow things down. But I've found my Chromecast/laptop/TV combo exceptionally useful and efficient. We game in the living room next to my 40" TV. Using Chromecast I can share the screen...

    D&D 5E Pathfinder AP conversion to 5e

I'm running Kingmaker 5E. Finished the first module, got detoured by a dungeon I made for about four sessions, and then will start Rivers Run Red next week. My advice is to not overthink it. It worked well thus far, but I suspect it will get worse as the CRs get higher (and the math diverges)...

    D&D 5E Monsters You Miss

Sure is. Love it. (Tangent: I'd love it if Paizo started publishing APs and content for 5E) Also chokers. What's up with that? I even thought they would be in the basic set. I've put a choker in just about every campaign I've ever run. Guess they're not as common as I thought.

    D&D 5E Monsters You Miss

    - Catoblepas (I'm about 99% sure it makes it in MM2 now, at least partially due to this post) - Chitine - Achaierai - Attic Whisperer - Brownie - Banderhobb - Grippli, particularly player stats - Ratfolk, again for PC purposes - Catfolk, again for PC purposes Everything super-weird from the...

    D&D 5E So who is playing 5E?

Huh...I'm totally sold on 5E but I'm getting a ton of mileage out of Pathfinder. I'm running the Pathfinder Kingmaker AP in 5E. I just finished the first book. I also bring Pathfinder Bestiaries 1-3 to the table. I'm planning on implementing the entire kingdom building rules from PF into 5E. An...

Inventing names is detrimental to my immersion

Humans have a hard time remembering names, particularly foreign and new names that can’t be associated with a familiar sound or experience. If you met a person named “Basmus” (actual Swedish name) on how many different occasions meeting Basmus would you have to ask him to remind you of his name...

    D&D 5E A Sense of Wonder in 5E

For what it's worth I'm in my late twenties and pretty genuinely bored of and disinterested with a lot of fantasy/sci-fi, videogames, and big-budget movies. The things that fascinated me when I was twelve - Lord of the Rings, Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, etc., put me to sleep now. As a DM I'm...

Baldur's Gate Countdown Ends... Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition for Summer 2012

Does that mean the game's going to stay in 2E? That's really cool in a retro-way. Update: Just saw the twitter. Indeed it still is.<s>#</s>bgee is 2nd Edition D&D. Our first rule is don't break the fun. Part of the appeal of BG was the depth of the rules system

Baldur's Gate Countdown Ends... Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition for Summer 2012

I wish people were a little more open-minded about consoles. I used to be a PC-only kind of guy with all the Quake mods and Deus Ex and all that jazz. Back then the attitude was consoles couldn't have deep games or console gamers didn't want them or something. Consoles don't suck anymore...

How Wizards of the Coast Could Slay in Profit

So let's assume the ultimate goal of WOTC is to sell subscriptions to DDI. I'm guessing the service has much higher profit-margins than print books and more likelihood of returning customers. WOTC should make every reasonable and affordable attempt to use DDI to appeal to as many customers as...

D&D Race You Hate the Most

I'm in the vast minority that picked elves. My beef is that players can't really differentiate them well from humans. They tend to become humans with pointy ears. I think the subtle racial differences don't lend themselves well to roleplaying unless someone is very good at bringing the character...

    Girls Gone Old School

I run a D&D group for about four women in their twenties/thirties. Due to stereotypes/misguided crap none of them were exposed to it early in life. But really they play exactly like the boys. There's no difference at all. Hopefully that crap about gaming being for boys dies off really soon.

After DDXP, how are you feeling about D&En?

How? D&D has always been intuitively flexible. In every edition of D&D, in chapter 1, the book states you can play and houserule the game however you like. As a DM I can take the 2E cosmology, ability score generating systems, and alignment system and just drop it into Pathfinder or 4E, no...

After DDXP, how are you feeling about D&En?

Since I wasn't in the playtest I don't quite follow. It seems to me like you're saying that they scaled back a lot of the rules for the core and left too much to the discretion of the DM. So in 3.5/4 you'd be able to configure your orc well enough and have enough rules to protect yourself from...

So my girlfriend wants to learn how to play D&D...

Certainly (I don't play Magic but that's so cool). But it seems a bit unrealistic to expect anyone to create an effective character build without ever playing the game. I've definitely noticed players get more frustrated when they feel like they have an ineffective character than any other time...

So my girlfriend wants to learn how to play D&D...

Personally I've had bad experiences dropping a new player into PF/4E games around level 7. Lots of folks get overwhelmed by character creation...but this one seems to have a bit more of a strategic mind.
